The PS5 runs the game; the Deck displays the stream and sends your controls. Sony does not list Steam Deck as an official Remote Play client, and Chiaki-ng is not a Sony app.
How PS5 streaming to Steam Deck works
Remote Play connects a PS5 to a compatible client over a network. For Steam Deck, Chiaki-ng—also recognized by its earlier Chiaki4Deck branding—is the community Linux client used to connect to PlayStation Remote Play. The console does the game processing, so this is streaming rather than installing or running the PS5 game on the Deck.

Sony’s PS Remote Play overview describes its service and supported client combinations but does not list Steam Deck. The Chiaki4Deck project identifies itself as an open-source community project and says it is not affiliated with Sony Interactive Entertainment. That distinction matters: the service is Sony’s, while the Deck client and its maintenance are community-led.
What you need before setting it up
- A Steam Deck and a PS4 or PS5 console.
- PlayStation Remote Play enabled on the console, current PlayStation system software, and a PSN account.
- Chiaki-ng installed on the Deck. The project’s releases page lists Linux Flatpak (Flathub) and AppImage options; use the current project instructions for installation and connection.
- About 200 MB of free storage, an estimate listed by the project rather than an independent measurement.
- A reliable network. Chiaki-ng recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi and says a wired Ethernet connection for the console is ideal.
The project does not establish a guaranteed minimum bandwidth or latency, so those recommendations are starting points, not promises of a particular stream quality. A separate controller is optional: the Deck’s integrated controls are enough for basic play.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Setup at a high level
- Enable Remote Play on the PS5. Make sure the console is online and follow Sony’s current console instructions.
- Install Chiaki-ng from a maintained release. Choose an available Linux distribution from the project’s releases and follow its current setup documentation.
- Register or connect the client to the console. Use the current Chiaki-ng directions for account and console registration rather than relying on old walkthroughs; exact setup details can change.
- Launch it from Steam Gaming Mode if desired. Follow the project’s current instructions for adding or launching the client, then adjust stream and control settings to suit your connection and layout.
Network quality shapes the experience
For play at home, keep the PS5 and Deck on a stable network. Prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi where the signal is strong; if practical, connect the PS5 to the router by Ethernet. The project does not say the Deck itself must be wired.
If the stream looks poor or stutters, Chiaki-ng suggests lowering the bitrate, checking the console’s signal strength, and closing other bandwidth-heavy applications. If the console is not found, check that both devices are on the same network, confirm the console’s IP address, verify Remote Play is enabled, and try the project’s pairing mode. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes.

Playing away from home depends on both network environments and the current client and console configuration. Chiaki-ng describes remote PSN connection mode and notes that port forwarding is not always needed in newer versions, but that is not a guarantee for every router or setup. Check the maintained setup and release notes for the version you use; do not treat port forwarding as a default requirement.
Controls and optional DualSense features
Chiaki-ng’s controller guide documents Deck gyro support without extra setup, plus touchpad and touchscreen mappings and custom layouts. It also describes PS5 haptics on the Deck controller.

DualSense features have more conditions: the guide says DualSense haptics require a USB connection, while adaptive triggers can work over USB or Bluetooth. Some controller functionality requires disabling Steam Input for the PlayStation controller; doing so can also remove access to certain Chiaki-ng shortcuts. Feature behavior can vary with controller, configuration, game, and software versions, so do not assume every extra will work automatically.
Games and PS5 functions that Remote Play cannot cover
Remote Play inherits restrictions set by Sony. Sony says some games are incompatible, including games that require PS VR2, PS VR, or PlayStation Camera. It also lists functions that cannot be used at the same time as Remote Play:

Choose this approach if you already own a PS5 and want to play its games on the Deck’s screen, accepting a community client and network-dependent streaming. It does not turn the Deck into a PS5, remove Sony’s Remote Play restrictions, or ensure good results on every home or remote network. If official client support is essential, note that Sony’s listed Remote Play clients do not include Steam Deck.
