Activision has been assigned to develop the next Halo title, but Xbox has not announced what the game is, when it will arrive, or which platforms it will support. The announcement confirms a new, purpose-built team separate from Call of Duty development; it does not confirm that the next Halo will be Halo: The Endless or any other specific game.
Is Activision making the next Halo game?
Yes. In an Xbox announcement on September 22, 2026, Xbox said Activision will develop the next Halo title through a “new, purpose-built team” separate from ongoing development and plans for Call of Duty. The announcement identifies who will develop the next title, not its design or production schedule. Read Xbox’s announcement.

Activision’s stated ambition, quoted in a September 2026 GamesRadar+ report, is “make the greatest Halo game ever, worthy of its universe and legacy, while staying true to what made players love it in the first place.” That is a goal, not a description of the game or a commitment to a release date.

What happens to Halo Studios and existing games?
Xbox said a small team at Halo Studios will continue supporting the Halo community and games already in market. That is a continuing support role for existing games, distinct from Activision’s assignment to develop the next title. Xbox did not specify the Halo-specific size of the team or describe its support plans beyond that statement.
The same September 22 announcement said 268 roles were being eliminated across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios management and central functions. Xbox did not say how many of those roles were at Halo Studios, so the figure should not be read as a Halo-only layoff count. Xbox’s announcement.

Will Halo Infinite still be supported?
Halo’s official esports update said Halo Infinite would continue to receive support and some online and LAN competition in 2026. It also said official Halo Championship Series competition would not return with a new title during 2026. That update describes the announced 2026 plan; it does not establish what support will look like after that year. Read the Halo esports update.
What do Campaign Evolved and the Unreal Engine 5 plans tell us?
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a current release, not a preview of the next title
Xbox’s June 7, 2026 Showcase recap said Halo: Campaign Evolved launched on July 28, 2026, for Xbox, Steam, and PlayStation, with day-one availability through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Xbox also noted a Collector’s Edition. Those details show that Halo releases continue, but do not reveal the identity or direction of Activision’s next title. See Xbox’s Showcase recap.

The 2024 Unreal Engine 5 announcement predates the reorganization
In a 2024 post, Halo Studios said it was working on multiple projects with Unreal Engine 5. The post characterized Project Foundry as research and training—“Neither a game nor a tech demo.” Because that information predates the September 2026 reorganization, it does not establish whether those projects continued, transferred to another team, or were cancelled. Read Halo Studios’ “A New Dawn” post.
In that same 2024 announcement, studio head Pierre Hintze described a change in approach: “So we’re not just going to try improve the efficiency of development, but change the recipe of how we make Halo games. So, we start a new chapter today.” That statement explains the studio’s earlier direction; it does not resolve what happened to the projects after the 2026 change.

So, is The Endless next?
There is no confirmation in Xbox’s announcement that the next game is Halo: The Endless. The announcement leaves the title and its premise undisclosed, so treating that name—or any specific format, platform, or release window—as confirmed would go beyond what Xbox has said.
