Red Dead Redemption 2 lets you shape how closely you engage with its world: change the camera and HUD, spend time with the gang at camp, and choose when to roam, gather supplies, or return to story missions. There is no single best setup. Try a few options and keep the ones that make your own play feel more involving.
Slow down between story missions
The gang’s camp can be more than a place to launch the next mission. PlayStation.Blog describes optional activities including talking with gang members, doing chores, hunting, listening to stories, and contributing money toward camp upgrades such as fast travel. Use those activities to make the stretches between missions feel like part of the adventure, rather than downtime to skip.

One low-pressure routine is to talk with someone at camp, take on a chore, then head out to hunt or gather ingredients. At a campfire, you can craft supplies using ingredients you find or purchase. Return to the story when you feel ready; this is a suggested rhythm, not a required or proven optimal route. PlayStation.Blog describes several camera choices: standard third-person, a pulled-back third-person view, first-person, and cinematic camera. The HUD can remain at its default, be minimized, or be turned off. Treat these as presentation preferences, not as a difficulty setting or a guarantee that one option is more immersive.

- Minimize or turn off the HUD if you want fewer interface elements competing with the scenery. You may need to pause and check menus more often.
- Try first-person for a closer view of the world, or use third-person if you prefer to see Arthur and his surroundings.
- Use the cinematic camera when its presentation suits what you are doing; switch back whenever you want a different view.

Let exploration and choice shape your pace
Exploration is not separate from the game’s intended experience. Xbox Wire describes Red Dead Redemption 2 as blending story with action and exploration with choice, under the threat of danger. That framing leaves room to follow the mission path closely or spend more time roaming before moving the story forward. For example, you might head out to gather ingredients for campfire crafting, then decide whether to continue exploring or return to camp.

The game’s expanded Dead Eye system is also part of Xbox Wire’s gameplay overview. If you want to engage more deeply with the systems, pay attention to how Dead Eye fits into your play rather than treating missions as a sequence of objectives to rush through. The overview confirms the system’s presence but does not establish specific ranks, controls, or upgrades.
