Valve has announced Steam Frame, a new VR product planned to begin shipping in early 2026, but it has not called the device an “Index 2” or explicitly identified it as an Index successor. The claim that Valve Index sales have slowed is also unverified: Valve’s public Steam hardware survey measures headset usage among surveyed Steam users, not sales.
Did Valve Index sales slow down?
There is no verified Index sales series in the available official sources to confirm that sales slowed after four years. Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey reports the headset mix used by surveyed Steam users. It does not publish Index unit sales, revenue, sell-through, or manufacturing volume. A change in survey share therefore cannot, by itself, show whether Index sales rose or fell.

That distinction matters: survey share describes a sample of people using Steam, while sales describe purchases over a defined period. Without a dated sales series or a transparent third-party estimate, the headline claim should be treated as unconfirmed rather than as an established trend.

What has Valve announced for what’s next?
Steam Frame is Valve’s new announced VR product
On November 12, 2025, Valve announced Steam Frame alongside Steam Controller and Steam Machine. The company said the three products were set to begin shipping in early 2026. That is Valve’s announced plan, not confirmation here of current availability; check Valve’s current product information for the latest status.
#1 Best Overall
Valve’s announcement names Steam Frame as a VR product, but does not call it “Index 2” or say it is an Index successor. It is reasonable to see Steam Frame as relevant to the future of Valve VR, but describing it as a formally confirmed replacement goes beyond what Valve announced.
What can Index owners and prospective buyers do now?
Choose between components and the complete system
Valve’s Index product page describes a system made up of a headset, controllers, and Base Stations 2.0. Valve says buyers can get components individually or purchase a complete kit through the Steam Store. Check the listing for your region: a live product page does not guarantee local stock.
Rank #2
- VR Experience: Immerse yourself in virtual reality with the Valve Index VR headset, designed specifically for PC and SteamVR platforms for seamless gaming and interactive experiences
- Display Quality: Experience crystal-clear visuals with high-resolution displays and optimized optics that deliver stunning graphics and reduced screen-door effect
- Comfort Design: Ergonomically engineered headset with adjustable head strap and face gasket ensures comfortable extended wear during long gaming sessions
- PC Integration: Seamlessly connects with your PC to access SteamVR's extensive library of virtual reality games, applications, and experiences
- Renewed with CPS 1-Year Warranty for added hardware protection.
If you already own part of the system, identify which components you need before choosing an individual component or full kit. The product page is the appropriate place to confirm Valve’s listed configuration; current price and availability depend on the regional store listing.
Consider compatible SteamVR headsets
Valve describes Steam as hardware agnostic and says SteamVR games can be played on compatible headsets beyond the Index. That gives buyers another route into SteamVR, but the available official information here does not establish a head-to-head comparison of price, display, optics, comfort, tracking, or performance. Check the specifications and compatibility details for the particular headset and games you care about rather than assuming every SteamVR title works identically on every device.

- HEADSET ONLY. (MAY NOT INCLUDE HEAD STRAP ADJUSTMENT PAD). Controllers and base station purchased seperately
- 5x IMPROVEMENT over first-generation PC VR HMDs.
What should Index owners know about warranty support?
Valve’s hardware warranty information lists Valve Index and related accessories as covered hardware and states a one-year limited warranty period beginning from shipment, subject to the applicable terms and exclusions. Owners with a hardware problem should contact Valve Support and review the terms that apply in their region.
