What’s the Difference Between Game Boy and Game Boy Pocket?

The Game Boy Pocket is a smaller, lighter redesign of the original monochrome Game Boy. Both use the same 160 × 144 LCD and the same exchangeable Game Paks, so the main differences are body size, weight, battery format, and the link-cable connector. The published figures for each are below, along with the places where Nintendo’s own pages disagree.

Side-by-side specifications

The table uses Nintendo’s UK legacy-system technical data unless a row names a different Nintendo page.

Body size and weight

The Pocket is the more portable console. Its listed width and height are each about 14 percent smaller than the original’s (127.6 mm against 148 mm, and 77.6 mm against 90 mm), its depth is about 21 percent smaller (25.3 mm against 32 mm), and it weighs about 43 percent less (125 g against 220 g). Those percentages are arithmetic on Nintendo’s listed figures. They describe the boxes Nintendo specified, not how a particular unit feels in a pocket or bag.

Notably, the Pocket’s screen is listed as very slightly larger. Nintendo’s UK table gives 4.8 × 4.4 cm for the Pocket against 4.7 × 4.3 cm for the original. The gain is small enough that you will not notice it as a size difference, but the Pocket is not a smaller screen in a smaller shell.

Power: batteries and playing time

Battery format

The original takes four AA cells and the Pocket takes two AAA cells, both rated at 1.5 V. The two consoles therefore cannot share a single set of spares. If you carry replacements, buy the size your console needs. Nintendo’s pages do not recommend a battery brand or chemistry, so this article does not either.

Why the playing-time figures disagree

Nintendo’s pages give two different estimates for the original Game Boy. Nintendo’s UK support table lists “Up to 30 hours” for the Classic and “Up to 10 hours” for the Pocket. Nintendo South Africa’s historical page gives “Approx. 15 hours (Game Boy), approx 10 hours (Game Boy Pocket).” Both pages agree on about 10 hours for the Pocket, but they disagree on the original by a factor of two. Treat all of these as manufacturer estimates rather than guaranteed runtime, and expect actual playing time to depend on the batteries, the game, and the screen settings you use.

Screen and display

Both models use a 160 × 144 pixel LCD. The original is monochrome, and the Pocket is not a color model; the Game Boy Color is a separate product that is outside this comparison. Both have a contrast control, which matters for used units because a screen that looks dim or washed out can often be adjusted. Specifications do not tell you whether a particular used screen is in good condition, so check it in person or ask the seller to show a test cartridge.

Cartridges and games

Nintendo lists both systems with exchangeable Game Paks, so the cartridge format is the same across the two. Nintendo’s history page describes the original Game Boy catalogue as having “over 450 games,” with no publication year given. The same page uses “over 100 million units” for the Game Boy system as a whole. That figure is not a Pocket-only sales number. Nintendo’s pages do not publish a title-by-title compatibility list for the two models, so if a specific game matters to you, confirm it against the game’s own listing.

Link cable and accessories

The connectors differ in size. Nintendo lists a large link-cable connection on the original and a small one on the Pocket, so a cable made for one will not necessarily fit the other. Nintendo Life’s June 2016 historical article reports that Nintendo released a Game Link Cable Adapter to let the Pocket connect to the original DMG-001. That is secondary reporting, not an official compatibility statement. Before you buy a cable or adapter, confirm the exact model numbers on both consoles and the adapter’s listed compatibility.

Which one to choose

Use these checks when you compare working examples, whether new to you or secondhand:

  • Portability: The Pocket is the smaller and lighter of the two, so it is the stronger choice if you travel with it.
  • Battery supply: Confirm you can easily source AA cells for the original or AAA cells for the Pocket, and do not assume one set of spares works in both.
  • Screen: Adjust the contrast control and check for dimming or uneven brightness across the display.
  • Cartridge and contacts: Look for worn or dirty cartridge contacts, and test any game you plan to play most.
  • Link cable: If you need a link connection, check the connector size and adapter compatibility for your specific model before buying.

On the published specifications, the Pocket is the more compact and portable option. These sources do not establish current prices, the condition of any particular used unit, or how long a given console will run on a set of batteries today, so those points remain yours to check.

Historical context

Nintendo’s history page says the original Game Boy launched in Japan in 1989. It describes the Pocket as a later size-reduction redesign and states: “In 1997, Nintendo went one better, shrinking the Game Boy’s dimensions to create the even smaller Game Boy Pocket series.” The page does not name an individual speaker, so the sentence should be attributed to Nintendo. Nintendo’s pages do not provide a verified regional launch chronology for the Pocket, so this article does not give one.
