Counter-Strike 2 launched on September 27, 2023. Valve released it as a free-to-play game and described it as a free upgrade to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO). It introduced the Source 2 version of Counter-Strike, with changes to smoke grenades, maps, Premier, visuals, audio, and more.
When did Counter-Strike 2 come out?
Valve released Counter-Strike 2 on September 27, 2023. On launch day, Premier Season One began, and Competitive, Wingman, and Private matchmaking were enabled. A short Training Day introduction was also added to help new players get started. Valve’s September 27 announcement and release notes document those launch details.
Valve called CS2 “the largest technical leap forward in Counter-Strike’s history, supporting new features today and updates for years to come.” That was Valve’s corporate description in its launch announcement, not a statement attributed to a named individual.
Is Counter-Strike 2 free?

What changed from CS:GO to CS2?
CS2 moved Counter-Strike to Source 2. Valve’s current Steam description highlights the following changes; these are the features Valve promotes, not independent measurements of how much performance or responsiveness improved for every player.
- Rendering, networking, and Workshop tools: Valve describes updates to all three.
- Premier and CS Rating: Premier was revamped, with CS Ratings and global and regional leaderboards.
- Maps: Valve describes maps as overhauled.
- Smoke grenades: Smokes are dynamic rather than fixed visual effects.
- Gameplay timing: Valve describes gameplay as tick-rate-independent.
- Visuals and audio: Visual effects and audio were redesigned.
- CS:GO items: Valve says items carried over into CS2.
The launch-day release notes also listed more specific adjustments: movement collision and bullet-penetration consistency improvements, changes to smoke behavior, audio customization and fixes, animation adjustments, map tweaks, demo playback, and item loadout controls. Valve also replaced weekly drops with a weekly Care Package, from which players could choose among weapon cases, weapon finishes, and graffiti. These were launch-day notes, not a complete record of later updates.

Can your PC run Counter-Strike 2?
Valve’s Steam listing currently gives Windows 10 and Ubuntu 20.04 as minimum operating systems, with 8 GB RAM and 85 GB of available storage. It also lists CPU and graphics requirements.
