Counter-Strike 1.4’s beta was part of Valve’s early-2002 Steam test, not the same thing as the public Counter-Strike 1.4 release. Contemporary reporting said the Steam-administered beta was nearing completion on April 19; version chronologies date the public update to April 24, 2002. The beta’s individual builds are not well documented, so the final release notes are the clearest guide to what 1.4 added.
What “Counter-Strike 1.4 beta” refers to
Counter-Strike 1.4 was an update to the GoldSrc-era game, whose earlier versions began as a Half-Life mod. Its beta period was intertwined with Valve’s early Steam testing. That distinction matters: references to the beta generally concern Steam-administered test builds, while “Counter-Strike 1.4” without qualification usually refers to the public update that followed.

On April 19, 2002, Worthplaying reported that the Steam beta for Half-Life 1.1.0.9 and Counter-Strike 1.4 was almost finished. The report said participation in Steam was not required and that the update was expected the following week. It described Steam as part of Valve’s move toward distributing updates through the platform, while noting that players could still use the traditional download route at the time. Beta period versus the public 1.4 release
| Stage | What is established |
|---|---|
| Steam-administered beta | Contemporary reporting on April 19, 2002, said the beta was almost finished. Worthplaying reported more than 100,000 Steam beta players and more than 20,000 public servers at that time; these are historical figures, not present-day counts. Source |
| Public Counter-Strike 1.4 update | Community-maintained version chronologies date the final public release to April 24, 2002. Counter-Strike version chronology |
The April 24 date is a chronology record rather than an official Valve release announcement. It is consistent with the contemporary April 19 report’s expectation that the public update would arrive the following week.

What the final 1.4 update changed

- Maps: the additions of cs_havana and de_chateau, plus an update to de_train.
- Anti-cheat: anti-cheat protection, connected in contemporary coverage to Valve’s anti-cheat network.
- Spectating and HLTV: an updated HLTV interface and expanded spectator features.
- Server behavior: improved accuracy for dedicated-server FPS reporting.
- Team and bomb information: speaking-player indicators on teammates’ radars and bomb-related radar notifications.
These details are recorded in a community-maintained changelog, so they should be read as a historical record rather than a surviving official Valve release note. Counter-Strike 1.4 changelog

How Steam fit into the update
The beta placed Counter-Strike 1.4 within a broader transition in how Valve distributed updates. Worthplaying’s April 19 report said Steam participants could receive updates through Steam and later play alongside users on public servers. It also made clear that Steam was not yet the only route: players could still obtain the update through a traditional download. The beta therefore marks an early stage of Steam’s role in distributing Valve games, rather than proof that Counter-Strike 1.4 was available only through Steam.
Can you find the original beta builds?
A Steam Community preservation post from 2025 seeks Counter-Strike 1.4 beta builds from February–March 2002 and describes them as lost media. That is a community preservation claim, not an official Valve statement. 2025 Steam Community preservation post

Because those build-specific materials are not established by the available records, there is no reliable beta-by-beta changelog here. The maps, interface changes, anti-cheat features, and other items above belong to the documented final 1.4 update; they should not automatically be attributed to every beta build.

Counter-Strike 1.4 is notable both as a game update and as part of Steam’s early distribution history. The beta tied a major Counter-Strike update to Steam testing, while the public release still had a traditional download path. Keeping the beta and the April 24 public version separate makes the surviving history clearer: the final update’s features are documented, but the precise contents of the February–March test builds remain uncertain.
