Sony confirmed that it had ended PlayStation 2 production worldwide in a statement to The Guardian, reported on January 4, 2013. The news marked the end of a console run that began with the PS2’s Japanese launch in March 2000—not a new announcement about PlayStation hardware in 2026.
When did Sony stop making the PlayStation 2?
Sony confirmed to The Guardian that production of the PlayStation 2 had ended worldwide. The Guardian published that report on January 4, 2013, describing a production run of about 12 years. The report is the dated confirmation; it should not be mistaken for a new announcement made in 2026. Read The Guardian’s report.
How many PS2 consoles and games had Sony sold?
Sony Computer Entertainment’s February 14, 2011 announcement recorded 150 million PlayStation 2 systems sold worldwide cumulatively as of January 31, 2011. Sony explicitly described that figure as a sell-in number, not a count of units confirmed to have reached individual players. The milestone came 10 years and 11 months after the console’s March 2000 Japanese release.
The same announcement said that more than 10,828 PS2 software titles had been released and more than 1.52 billion software units had been sold worldwide as of the end of December 2011. These are dated figures, not current totals. See Sony’s 2011 announcement.

Why was the PlayStation 2 significant?
Sony described the PS2 as the first home computer entertainment system to integrate DVD technology. Alongside games, that gave the console a role as a DVD player in many homes. Sony also highlighted the DUALSHOCK 2 controller and the Eye Toy USB Camera, released in 2003, as examples of how players could interact with games.
“PlayStation 2 was also successful in delivering intuitive game play through the highly popular DUALSHOCK 2 controller as well as through Eye Toy USB Camera, released back in 2003.”

No. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s separate 2026 announcement says production of physical discs for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will end starting in January 2028. That is a future change concerning new game discs, not a new PS2 hardware-production decision. The PS2 production end had already been reported in 2013.
