U.S. preorders for Nintendo Switch 2 opened on April 24, 2025. Walmart, Target, and Best Buy opened overnight around midnight Eastern Time; GameStop began in-store preorders at store opening and opened online orders at 11 a.m. ET. These are historical preorder times, not upcoming opportunities.

The retailers did not all open at one precisely verified minute: the Associated Press characterized Best Buy’s timing as overnight, while Axios specified midnight ET.

Why the preorder date changed
Nintendo’s April 2 announcement initially said participating North American retailers would begin preorders April 9. The U.S. preorder date was later moved to April 24, 2025, as reported by Axios and the Associated Press. Nintendo’s April 2 announcement; Axios
What happened after preorders opened
Target said its Switch 2 preorder allotment on Target.com sold out in less than two hours. Walmart told the Associated Press that its listings sold out quickly amid high demand, saying, “The excitement around this online preorder was incredible.” Those reports describe individual retailers; they do not establish a total preorder count or market-wide sellout time.

Nintendo launched the Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, including the console and a bundle with Mario Kart World. Target said the system and bundle would be available in stores on launch day and online June 6, subject to supply. Nintendo and Target
Launch-day access was also distinct from preorder timing: Best Buy announced that nearly all U.S. stores would open at 12:01 a.m. ET on June 5 for preorder pickup and limited walk-in purchases.
