The chest’s high-end rewards are appropriate for your character’s level, so waiting can make sense when you want gear you’re less likely to outlevel quickly. There is no specific level at which opening it is officially better.
How the Golden Chest works
The Golden Chest on Sanctuary III, near Marcus Munitions, requires a Golden Key. Its contents are randomized, and 2K describes the selection as “high-end gear appropriate for your level” (2K’s Golden Keys announcement). That means the chest can offer an on-level gear refresh, not a guaranteed item or a targeted drop.

Should you save Golden Keys until max level?
Not necessarily. Use a key whenever the gear could help with your current missions or your equipment is falling behind. If you are close to leveling and your gear is still effective, saving the key until after you level is reasonable: the reward will be appropriate for your later level, based on 2K’s description. This is a practical timing choice, not a tested optimization or an official rule.
Choose your timing based on what you need

| You need a particular weapon or build-defining item | Do not rely on the Golden Chest as targeted farming | The reward is random, so it does not promise a specific item. |
Does the Golden Chest guarantee legendary loot?
No specific item is guaranteed. The chest offers randomized high-rarity gear, but the available sources do not establish a numeric legendary drop rate, an item count, or improved rarity odds for waiting. Treat a key as a chance at a broad gear upgrade rather than a way to secure a particular legendary.

How to get and redeem Golden Keys
Golden Keys can be rewards from SHiFT codes. Epic’s Borderlands 3 SHiFT redemption guide explains that codes can be redeemed in-game or through Gearbox’s official SHiFT site, after which the reward must be claimed in-game or through the mailbox. Code validity varies: some last a long time, while others can expire in days or weeks. Check whether a particular code is still active before relying on it; an expired code and a key already in your inventory are separate things.
