Replace a player as soon as reliable news confirms he is inactive: an inactive player cannot score fantasy points. If his status is still uncertain, wait for an update only while you still have an eligible, unlocked replacement available. Otherwise, decide whether to use a viable earlier-game backup before that backup locks.
What to do when a player is a game-time decision
“Game-time decision” means the player’s availability has not been settled; it is not the same as being ruled inactive. Do not bench a player solely because of an uncertain designation. Check credible late updates, then weigh the chance he plays and his expected workload against the role and likely points of your alternative.
NFL Fantasy Support says teams designate inactives about 90 minutes before scheduled kickoff. Treat that as a useful time to check the official inactive list, not a guarantee that every update arrives at a fixed moment. The NFL’s injury-report policy distinguishes practice participation from a game-status designation, and calls for prompt reporting of relevant events after Friday’s update and before the inactive-player submission meeting. A practice designation alone does not settle whether a player will play.
When to make the replacement
If the player is confirmed inactive
Replace him if you have an eligible player who has not locked. NFL Fantasy Support notes that an inactive player cannot score. Check the official inactive list and your platform’s lineup status before the replacement’s game starts.

If the player is still uncertain
Waiting can preserve the chance to start your original player, but it is only useful if your alternative remains available. If the backup plays earlier, that player’s lineup slot may lock before the late decision. When you would have no legal way to react afterward, decide whether the earlier backup is a better risk than leaving the slot exposed.
If you have no eligible, unlocked backup
Check position eligibility and league rules before moving anyone. A bench player who cannot legally fill the slot—or whose game has already started—does not solve the problem.

How to compare the player and the backup
For a genuine start-or-sit choice, compare these factors rather than treating the injury label as the whole decision:
- Availability: Is the player confirmed active, inactive, or still uncertain?
- Expected workload: If active, is he likely to have his usual role or a limited one?
- Backup role: How much playing time and opportunity is the alternative likely to receive?
- Scoring format: Which statistics your league rewards can change the value of each player’s expected contributions.
- Eligibility and lock time: Can the backup fill the slot, and will his game start before you can make a later change?
- Matchup: Consider it alongside role and scoring—not as a substitute for knowing whether the player is available.
There is no universal start/sit formula in the official guidance; the right call depends on the players and your league settings.

Check your platform’s deadline and auto-swap settings
Lineup deadlines vary by platform and league. NFL.com’s beginner guide advises managers to follow player news, keep bench depth or a waiver-wire replacement available, and make changes before the relevant game starts. The NFL Fantasy 2024 rules PDF likewise ties lineup changes to a player’s scheduled start. Check your own league’s rules and the deadline shown in your platform rather than assuming every service handles locks identically.
NFL Fantasy offers an optional Auto-Swap Inactives setting. Its support page says it swaps out a starter projected to score zero and starts the highest-ranked player in the manager’s configured backup list. This is specific to NFL Fantasy; verify whether your platform offers an equivalent, how it works, and whether it is enabled.

- Check the latest reliable status update and, near kickoff, the official inactive list.
- Confirm whether the player is actually inactive or merely uncertain.
- Check your league’s position eligibility and the replacement’s kickoff and lock time.
- Compare the replacement’s expected role with the original player’s likely availability and workload, using your scoring format.
- Make the change before the replacement locks if you decide not to wait; check any auto-swap setting rather than assuming it will act for you.
