Bench an injured player when he cannot contribute and leaving him in your active lineup would waste a scoring opportunity. Use a fantasy injured-reserve slot only if your league’s platform rules say he is eligible; then weigh any replacement against the value of holding, trading, or dropping him. The right move depends on lineup locks, roster depth, scoring settings, available replacements, and whether your league rewards long-term value.

Use this decision flow

  1. Check the player’s status and your lineup lock. Confirm whether he is expected to play and whether your league uses daily or weekly lineup changes.
  2. Check fantasy IR eligibility. An NHL injury designation does not automatically qualify a player for a fantasy IR slot.
  3. Compare replacement options. Look for a waiver player with a plausible path to useful deployment and production in your scoring format.
  4. Weigh the roster spot. Hold, trade, or drop based on the expected value of keeping the injured player versus using the spot for an available contributor.

When should you bench an injured player?

Bench a player who is unavailable or unlikely to contribute, provided your league lets you change the lineup before its lock. An active player can earn fantasy points; a benched player or one in another inactive slot does not. In Yahoo leagues configured for daily lineup changes, Yahoo says changes can be made until the player’s scheduled game start. That timing is platform- and league-specific, so check your own league’s lock rules rather than assuming every lineup works the same way.

Weekly lineup changes create a different decision: a player listed as day-to-day may miss games after the lineup has locked, while starting him could leave you with an unusable slot. Before locking, consider the certainty of his availability and whether you have a healthy alternative.

When should you use a fantasy IR slot?

Use an eligible IR slot when your league permits the move and freeing the roster spot is more valuable than keeping the injured player in an ordinary roster position. Check the actual league settings and the player’s platform status first. Some settings require a real-life injured-reserve designation; other injury statuses may not qualify.

NHL IR and fantasy IR are not the same thing

NHL rules allow a club to place a player on Injured Reserve when he is unable to perform hockey duties. A player placed on NHL IR must be unable to play for at least seven days and is ineligible for NHL games for at least seven days. This is a roster rule, not an estimate of how long an injury will take to heal, and it does not determine fantasy-platform eligibility. See the NHL Hockey Operations Guidelines.

Check your league’s specific eligibility labels

Yahoo’s published default settings list two IR slots requiring the player to be on real-life IR, but custom leagues can differ; confirm the current settings in your league. Yahoo’s fantasy glossary described IR+ as accepting IR or day-to-day players, but that glossary is dated September 24, 2016, so verify whether the option and its definitions apply to your current league. Do not assume a general NHL injury report or a day-to-day label is enough to move a player into your fantasy IR slot.

How to choose a replacement

Start with role, not name recognition. A teammate moving up the depth chart may gain the deployment needed to produce, but compare him with the best player actually available on waivers. NHL.com fantasy guide author Pete Jensen recommends looking for players who can move up the depth chart and take on similar usage and fantasy production. That is a useful search principle, not a guarantee that a particular call-up or line change will deliver the same output.

What to compare Question to ask
Role and usage Is a teammate likely to move up the depth chart or receive more meaningful deployment?
Scoring fit Will the player help the categories or point values your league actually scores?
Availability Is he on waivers, and can you add him within your league’s transaction limits?
Schedule and timing Does he have games in the scoring window, and can he be started before the applicable lineup lock?
Roster cost Is there an open bench or IR slot, or will you need to drop someone to add him?
League horizon Is this redraft, keeper, or dynasty, and does future value justify holding the injured player?

Yahoo’s fantasy guidance recommends considering usage, available players, and roster needs when replacing an injured player. NHL.com’s glossary also discusses using waivers and considering positional needs. Treat those as general decision factors: your scoring settings and the actual waiver pool determine which option is best for your team.

When should you trade or drop the player?

Think in terms of roster opportunity cost, not a universal number of missed games. The longer or less certain the absence, the more costly it can be to hold a player when IR is unavailable or full and a useful replacement is on waivers. No general return-to-play cutoff is established here, and the NHL’s seven-day IR minimum is not a recovery forecast.

Trade when another manager’s timeline differs from yours

A trade can make sense if another manager values the injured player’s longer-term contribution and can offer help for your immediate roster needs. A positional imbalance or a playoff push may make a healthy contributor more useful to you now. The trade only improves your team if the return fits your league’s scoring and roster rules.

Drop when the roster spot has greater expected value

Consider dropping when holding the injured player costs you more than the value you expect from keeping him—for example, when there is no usable IR space, the absence is lengthy or uncertain, and a worthwhile waiver option is available. The decision is format-dependent: a redraft manager can prioritize this season’s production, while keeper and dynasty managers may have reason to protect future value.

Check your league settings before making the move

  • Whether lineups change daily or weekly, and the lock time for each player.
  • Which injury statuses qualify for IR or any flexible injury slot.
  • How many IR slots exist and whether they are already occupied.
  • Add/drop limits, waiver timing, and any other transaction restrictions.
  • Your scoring categories or point values, position needs, and relevant schedule.
  • Whether the league is redraft, keeper, or dynasty.

Fantasy roster settings vary by platform and custom league. Yahoo’s help pages describe Yahoo mechanics, not universal rules; verify the settings in your own league before relying on a default.
