There is no single Minecraft skins folder that applies to every edition. Where a skin lives depends on whether you play Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, and on whether the skin is a custom PNG, an imported Bedrock skin pack, or content bought from the Marketplace. For Java, official documentation describes uploading a PNG through the Launcher rather than naming a local storage folder. For Bedrock skin packs, Microsoft documents one specific import destination: the skin_packs folder inside com.mojang. Everything else is accessed inside the game.
Identify your edition and skin type first
The answer changes with the edition, so start there. Java and Bedrock use different skin workflows, and a file that is easy to find for one edition may not exist at all in the other.

- Java Edition, custom skin: a plain PNG file you import through the Minecraft Launcher.
- Bedrock Edition, custom skin pack: a package with a
.mcpackextension that you open to import. - Bedrock Marketplace skin: content you own through the in-game Marketplace. It is not delivered as a file you can open.
- Bedrock character-creator item: an item you equip in the Dressing Room.
Java Edition: skins are uploaded, not filed in a documented folder
In Java Edition, the official workflow is to import a PNG through the Launcher. Minecraft’s own explanation is that the PNG is sent to its web service and then appears on your character in game. In its 2018 article “Minecraft: Java Edition Skins Issue Update,” published April 18, 2018, Minecraft staff put it this way: any Java Edition player can upload their own custom skin in the widely used PNG format to the web service at minecraft.net, and it will then appear on their character in game. That statement is historical, so treat it as an explanation of the workflow rather than a guarantee about current internal storage.
To import a skin:
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and select Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Open the Skins tab.
- Use the import option on that tab and select your PNG file.
- Check the Skins tab to confirm which skin is active.
If you need the original PNG, look first in the folder where you downloaded or created it, such as Downloads or your image-editor output folder. The official pages consulted do not describe a universal local cache folder for Java skins, and they do not promise that the Launcher keeps a copy of the source file in any particular place. Do not rely on a cache path you find in a forum post unless it is confirmed for your operating system and Launcher version.

Bedrock Edition: skin packs go to skin_packs
Bedrock is the one edition where Microsoft documents a specific skin storage destination. Microsoft Learn’s “Change Your Look: An Introduction To Skin Packs” (last updated July 31, 2025) states that when you open a .mcpack skin pack, Minecraft imports it into the skin_packs folder inside the com.mojang directory. A related Microsoft Learn page, “Packaging a Skin Pack” (last updated December 14, 2023), describes the contents of a pack as skin metadata plus PNG textures.
Two limits matter here:
- The documented destination applies to skin packs imported by opening a
.mcpack. It is not a universal path for every individual skin, Marketplace item, or device. - The sources consulted name the
skin_packsfolder but do not give a complete location forcom.mojangon every platform. Locate that directory on your own device before relying on it, and do not assume the same parent path on Windows, Android, iOS, or a console.
Marketplace skins and Dressing Room items: accessed in game
Content purchased from the Bedrock Marketplace is managed through the game’s menus, not the file system. Use Marketplace > My Library to find owned content and download or equip it as offered. Items you wear are chosen in the Dressing Room. Minecraft’s Marketplace help pages describe these navigation steps, not a file path, so there is no documented PNG you can copy out of the Marketplace library.

Phones and tablets: the documented paths are for worlds
Mobile is where people most often find a path and assume it holds their skins. The official mobile instructions consulted cover world backups, not skin files, so they should not be used to locate a skin.
- Android world storage: Minecraft’s Android guidance (published in Spanish) gives the external world location
Android/data/com.mojang.minecraftpe/files/games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds. That is a world folder only. - iPhone and iPad world backup: on a Mac, open Finder, select the device, go to Files, select Minecraft, and copy the
gamesfolder to back up worlds. This is also a world backup, not a skin location.
Quick reference by what you are looking for
| What you mean | Where to look | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Java custom skin | Launcher, Minecraft: Java Edition, Skins tab; import the PNG | No documented local cache folder; the source PNG is whatever file you saved |
| Bedrock skin pack (.mcpack) | skin_packs inside com.mojang |
Applies to packs imported by opening a .mcpack, not to every skin |
| Marketplace skin | Marketplace > My Library | In-game library; no file path documented |
| Dressing Room item | Dressing Room | In-game item; not a standalone PNG |
| Android worlds | Android/data/com.mojang.minecraftpe/files/games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds |
World storage only; not evidence about skins |
| iPhone/iPad worlds | Finder, device, Files, Minecraft, games folder |
World backup only; not evidence about skins |
If you cannot find a skin file
- For Java, the file you imported is the source of truth. If it is gone, re-create the skin from your image editor or redownload it from where you got it, then import it again on the Skins tab.
- For Bedrock skin packs, check
skin_packsinsidecom.mojangon the device where the pack was imported. A pack imported on one device is not automatically present on another. - For Marketplace content, sign in to the account that bought it and check My Library before assuming it was lost.
What the official documentation does not establish
Official Minecraft and Microsoft documentation consulted for this topic does not provide a current, per-operating-system cache path for Java skins, nor a universal filesystem location for Bedrock custom skins across Windows, Android, iOS, Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch. Any folder path for those cases should be verified against current platform documentation before it is treated as fact.
