Where Are My PC Games Stored? Find Game Files and Saves on Windows

PC games do not share one Windows folder. Here is how to find installation files and saves through Steam, Epic, EA, Xbox, Microsoft Store, GOG and other launchers.

There is no single Windows folder for PC games. The location depends on the launcher, the drive chosen during installation, your Windows account, and whether the game came from a traditional desktop launcher or the Microsoft Store/Xbox app.

The quickest way to find a game is to open the launcher that owns it, open its library, and use the game’s Browse local files, Open installation folder, Manage, or Properties command. If you are looking for progress rather than the installed game, check the separate save-file locations described below.

First, identify which files you need

“Game files” can mean several different things:

  • Installation files: executables such as .exe, .dll files, asset archives, patches, shader caches and folders such as Binaries, Content, Data or _CommonRedist.
  • Save files: your progress, which is often stored outside the installation folder.
  • Launcher files: manifests, download caches, logs and configuration data used by Steam, Epic, EA or another launcher.

Finding a folder does not automatically mean it is safe to delete, rename, copy or edit. Use the owning launcher for uninstalling, moving or verifying a game whenever possible.

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

The fastest way to find an installed game

  1. Open the launcher that installed or manages the game.
  2. Open Library, Installed games or the equivalent list.
  3. Open the game’s menu and choose Browse local files, Open installation folder, Manage, Properties or a similarly named option.
  4. Note the complete path, including the drive letter. It may be on D:, an external SSD or another library drive rather than C:.

Interface labels change between launcher versions, but the launcher’s displayed installation path is more reliable than any generic Windows path.

Use a desktop shortcut

For a manually installed game or a launcher without a clear folder button, right-click its desktop or Start-menu shortcut and choose Open file location. If that opens another shortcut, right-click it, choose Properties, and inspect the Target and Start in fields on the Shortcut tab.

The target may be a launcher or bootstrapper rather than the main game executable. In that case, use the game launcher’s own file-browsing command.

Search all of Windows

  1. Press Windows+E to open File Explorer.
  2. Select This PC, not just the current folder.
  3. Search for the game title, a distinctive executable name or, if necessary, *.exe.
  4. Sort results by size, date modified or folder.
  5. Confirm the result by checking for substantial game data and expected folders.

Searching from This PC is broader but can be slower, and indexing or permissions may affect the results. Microsoft’s guidance on finding files and apps is available through Microsoft Support.

Common PC game locations

Launcher or source Common location Important qualification
Steam C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon Steam libraries can be created on another drive or in another folder.
Epic Games Store C:Program FilesEpic Games The installation directory can be selected during installation.
EA app C:Program FilesEA Games This is separate from the EA app’s own program folder.
Microsoft Store/Xbox app C:Program FilesWindowsApps or a managed folder such as D:XboxGames Locations and access rules vary by title and installation method.
GOG GALAXY User-selected library folder There is no universal default path.
Other launchers A user-selected publisher or game folder Use the launcher’s installation or properties screen.

Find games by launcher

Steam

  1. Open Steam and go to Library.
  2. Right-click the game.
  3. Choose Manage and then Browse local files.

Steam’s documented default is:

C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon<Game Name>

However, Steam supports additional libraries, for example:

D:SteamLibrarysteamappscommon<Game Name>

To see the libraries configured for your Steam installation, open Steam > Settings > Storage. Select a drive or library to inspect its installed games. Steam’s current library guidance is in its support documentation.

Epic Games Store

  1. Open the Epic Games Launcher.
  2. Open Library.
  3. Open the game’s three-dot menu and look for its management or installation-location option.

Epic documents C:Program FilesEpic Games as a default installation directory, but the installation folder can be selected during setup. The actual game may therefore be on another drive or under a custom folder. See Epic’s guidance on the installation directory and default installation location.

EA app

  1. Open the EA app.
  2. Open Library.
  3. Select the game or open its menu under Installed games.
  4. Check its installation or location controls.

EA game files are commonly found under:

C:Program FilesEA Games<Game Name>

Do not confuse that with the EA app itself, which is normally installed separately under:

C:Program FilesElectronic ArtsEA DesktopEA Desktop

If an EA game was purchased through Steam, Steam may contain the main game files while EA app stores supporting components and account information. EA’s EA app guide and installation troubleshooting explain the current workflow.

Microsoft Store and Xbox app for PC

These games may use Windows-managed locations such as:

C:Program FilesWindowsApps

Xbox installations may instead use a managed folder selected during setup, such as:

D:XboxGames
  1. Open the Xbox app.
  2. Select My Library.
  3. Select the game and open Manage.
  4. Look for Files, Change drive or another folder-management control.

WindowsApps is protected by design. Do not take ownership, change its permissions or manually delete package files just to reach a game. Doing so can interfere with updates, licensing, package registration and other Store applications. Use Xbox, Microsoft Store or Windows repair, move and uninstall controls instead. Microsoft explains the access model in its file-access permissions documentation.

GOG GALAXY

GOG GALAXY normally installs games in a library folder chosen by you. Open GOG’s installation settings rather than relying on a universal path. Its support documentation explains how to change both the game-installation and download locations: GOG Support.

Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Rockstar and manually installed games

For these launchers, open the installed-game list and look for Properties, Manage, Installation or a similar command. Copy the path shown there. If the launcher has lost track of the folder, look for Locate, Find installed game, Scan or Import.

Where PC game saves are stored

Save files are often separate from the large installation folder. Common locations include:

%USERPROFILE%DocumentsMy Games
%USERPROFILE%Documents
%USERPROFILE%Saved Games
%APPDATA%
%LOCALAPPDATA%
%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalLow

Paste one of these paths into File Explorer’s address bar. Environment variables such as %USERPROFILE% automatically use your Windows account folder, so you do not need to replace a username manually.

Different games choose different locations. Some use Documents, others use AppDataLocal, AppDataLocalLow or AppDataRoaming; some use a game-specific folder beside the installation. Epic lists these as common local-save locations and notes that the developer ultimately determines the exact path. Steam likewise notes that third-party developers decide where their games store saves.

For a save backup, copy the game’s save folder and any important configuration folder to a separate drive. Cloud saves are useful, but they are not a guaranteed backup: synchronization conflicts, corruption, disabled cloud saving or account changes can prevent recovery.

If the launcher cannot find an existing installation

A launcher may lose track of a game after a manual move, launcher reinstallation, Windows reinstallation, drive-letter change or deletion of its manifest. Use this order:

  1. Reconnect the drive and confirm it appears in File Explorer.
  2. Check Disk Management if the drive has a different letter than before.
  3. Confirm the old folder still contains substantial game data.
  4. Re-add the library location in the launcher’s settings.
  5. Use Locate, Scan, Import or Find installed game if available.
  6. Back up saves before attempting repair or verification.
  7. Do not delete the old folder until the launcher has detected or verified it.

If a launcher has no locate function, some official support procedures use a new installation pointed at the existing folder so the launcher can verify files. Do this only when the launcher’s own instructions support it; otherwise it may start a full redownload. Epic specifically warns that previously installed games may not be detected automatically after the launcher or Windows has been removed or reinstalled. See its recovery guidance.

  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.

What to do with the folder

Freeing disk space

Uninstall through the owning launcher or Xbox/Windows management screen. Manually deleting a game directory can leave manifests, shortcuts, registry entries, cloud metadata or caches behind, and the launcher may still think the game is installed.

Installing mods

Most mods target the game’s installation folder, not the save folder, and some mod managers need the path to the main executable. Follow the mod’s official instructions because games use different folders and loaders. Anti-cheat systems may reject modified files, updates may overwrite them, and Microsoft Store/Xbox permissions can make traditional modding difficult or unsupported.

Moving a game

Use the launcher’s move or storage-management feature where available. A manual copy may create a duplicate, break the recorded library path or trigger a redownload. If you use an external drive, keep it connected during updates and make sure its drive letter does not change.

Backing up a complete installation

Back up saves separately from installation files. A copied installation may not include launcher manifests, licensing information, cloud metadata or required redistributables, so it is not always enough to restore a playable game. The launcher’s built-in backup, move or verification feature is safer when provided.

When there are duplicate game folders

Multiple folders can represent an old installation, a backup, a second storefront version, a demo, a beta, a partial download, a renamed library or a copy on another Windows account. Compare:

  • the folder size;
  • modification dates;
  • the executable and asset structure;
  • the drive letter;
  • the path recorded by the launcher.

The folder currently launched by the shortcut or launcher is the one to treat as active. Do not delete the other copy until you have confirmed it is not needed for saves, mods or another storefront.

Quick troubleshooting checklist

  • Which launcher owns the game? Check Steam, Epic, EA, Xbox/Microsoft Store, GOG or the publisher launcher.
  • Is the drive connected? Check internal, external and secondary SSDs.
  • Did the drive letter change? Use Disk Management before reinstalling.
  • Does the launcher show a path? Prefer that path over a generic default.
  • Are you looking for saves? Check Documents, Saved Games and AppData separately.
  • Is Windows blocking access? Especially avoid modifying WindowsApps.
  • Was the launcher or Windows recently reinstalled? Re-add the library and use locate/import or verification tools.
  • Does a shortcut open the wrong folder? Inspect its Target and Start in fields.
