The Nintendo Switch 2 Best Buy preorder window is over. Nintendo Switch 2 launched in the U.S. on June 5, 2025, at $449.99 for the standalone system or $499.99 for the Mario Kart World bundle. In 2026, shoppers should look for current stock, restocks and bundle availability—not an upcoming preorder date.
Best Buy confirmed launch-day preorder pickup and limited walk-in inventory. Nintendo, not Best Buy, is the authoritative source for the console’s specifications, compatibility and system features.

What happened to the Best Buy preorder?
Best Buy’s Switch 2 preorder plans changed during the 2025 launch buildup, and contemporaneous reports documented shifting retailer timing and heavy demand. The clearest official Best Buy announcement concerned June 5, 2025: nearly all U.S. stores were scheduled to open at 12:01 a.m. Eastern for preorder pickup and walk-in purchases, with limited quantities of consoles, games and accessories.

A preorder confirmation was not a guarantee of launch-day delivery. Shipping estimates, store pickup reservations and walk-in inventory were separate situations, and retailer websites experienced outages and shortages during launch. The original preorder period is now historical.

U.S. price and configurations
| Configuration | U.S. launch MSRP | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 system | $449.99 | Buyers who do not want Mario Kart World or already own it |
| Switch 2 + Mario Kart World | $499.99 | Buyers who would purchase the game separately |
Nintendo announced both prices, and Best Buy’s captured standalone listing showed the console at $449.99. Retailer discounts, financing, protection plans and marketplace offers are separate from the console’s MSRP.
The bundle includes a Mario Kart World download code. It is the more sensible choice if you actually want the game; the standalone system may be better if you do not, already own it, or find a significant discount on the console alone.
The upgrades that matter
A larger, sharper handheld screen
Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch 1080p LCD display, compared with the original standard Switch’s 6.2-inch 720p screen. The difference is most noticeable in handheld mode, where menus, text and detailed environments can look clearer.
That resolution is a capability, not a promise that every game renders at 1080p.
Higher docked-output ceilings
The Switch 2 dock supports output of up to 4K, while compatible games and display setups can support up to 120 frames per second. Actual resolution and frame rate depend on the game, mode, television, HDMI setup and performance target. A 4K television is not required to use the console, and owners of older 1080p TVs may still benefit from improved performance and image quality.
Eight times the original Switch’s internal storage
The console includes 256GB of internal storage—eight times the original Switch’s 32GB. Some space is reserved for system data, so the full 256GB is not available for games.

- Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
- Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***
Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards for expandable storage. Do not assume that an ordinary microSD card from the original Switch is an appropriate Switch 2 game-storage solution. Choose a card explicitly identified as microSD Express and compatible with Switch 2.
Joy-Con 2 and mouse controls
Joy-Con 2 controllers attach magnetically and can provide mouse-style controls in compatible games. Mouse functionality is not a universal replacement for traditional controls. The right Joy-Con 2 also has a C Button for starting GameChat.
GameChat, screen sharing and video
GameChat supports voice chat and game-screen sharing, with video chat available through a compatible USB-C camera sold separately. Nintendo also says the console has a built-in microphone with noise-filtering functionality.
The launch-era open-access period ended on March 31, 2026. As of August 2026, Nintendo Switch Online is required for GameChat, along with the relevant account and internet connection requirements.
Can you play original Switch games?
Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but compatibility is not universal. Existing cartridges may work when supported, and digital purchases associated with a Nintendo Account can be available on the new system subject to Nintendo’s account and transfer rules.
Some games receive free updates, while others offer paid upgrade packs or separate Nintendo Switch 2 Edition releases. Nintendo maintains a compatibility and issue resource for titles with known problems or planned fixes.
How Switch 2 Edition upgrades work
A Switch 2 Edition combines an original Switch game with an upgrade pack that can add visual improvements, features or modes. Depending on the title, the upgrade may be available through the Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, a retailer code, or at no additional cost to certain Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members.

A camera, microSD Express card, Pro Controller, charging grip and other accessories are not automatically included unless a particular bundle says otherwise. Existing docks, chargers, controllers, cases and storage cards should be checked individually for Switch 2 compatibility rather than assumed to transfer perfectly.
Who should upgrade?
Switch 2 is the stronger choice for existing owners who want a clearer handheld display, improved performance, substantially more internal storage, Switch 2-exclusive games, or GameChat and compatible mouse controls. It is also more compelling for frequent TV-mode players with compatible 4K equipment.
Staying with the original Switch can make sense if you mainly play an existing library that already performs well, rarely use handheld mode, have no interest in new exclusives or online communication, and do not want to spend $449.99 plus games and possible storage.
Digital buyers should plan for future microSD Express expansion if they keep many large games installed. Physical buyers may reduce internal-storage pressure, although individual releases can have download requirements, so check each game’s format.
