Fake Metal Sonic’s design traces back to Sonic Heroes, where metal versions of the teams appeared as a hidden feature in the game’s two-player mode. The familiar name “Fake Metal Sonic” is used in later references; the available evidence does not show that it was the name used for the character in Sonic Heroes.
The original appearance was in Sonic Heroes
Sonic Heroes included metal variants of the playable teams in its two-player mode. A community-maintained reference describes activating them after selecting a level by entering a platform-specific button combination. This makes the hidden metal team variant the earliest identified game appearance of the design.
The activation inputs differ among PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and PC, so there is no single code that applies to every version. The feature is described in the Sonic Heroes reference.
“Fake Metal Sonic” is a later label
A reference for Sonic Speed Simulator identifies Fake Metal Sonic as an Exotic character variant and connects the Fake Metal designs to the Sonic Heroes two-player feature. That supports the design’s origin, but it does not establish that the exact label “Fake Metal Sonic” appeared in Sonic Heroes itself.

The evidence also does not establish an official Sega explanation or a definitive franchise-canon status for the character. It is safest to distinguish the early in-game design from the later name used for it.
How the Meteor Mystery event fits in
Sonic Speed Simulator later presented a clone in its Meteor Mystery event story as connected to meteor fragments. That is later event framing, not evidence that the metal design originated with the event: the design had already appeared in Sonic Heroes.
