Roblox’s familiar “oof” death sound is linked in later reporting to Messiah, a 2000 game associated with Tommy Tallarico. Roblox disputed Tallarico’s ownership claim, saying its founders obtained the sound from a licensed stock-sound CD-ROM. The sound was removed in 2022 over what Roblox called a licensing issue, then returned as Roblox’s default death sound in July 2025. The available accounts do not settle who created it or disclose the full terms of its return.
Where did the Roblox “oof” sound come from?
The sound became one of Roblox’s most recognizable audio cues. Windows Central’s reporting connects it to Messiah, released in 2000, and to composer Tommy Tallarico. That is a reported connection, not a definitive finding about authorship or legal ownership.
Roblox offered a different account in a January 2020 Developer Forum statement. The company said founders Erik and David obtained the “oof” and other original Roblox sounds from “a stock sound CD-ROM they purchased of licensed, copyright free sounds.” Roblox also disputed the suggestion that the founders had taken it from an illegal website. Read Roblox’s statement on the Developer Forum.
Did Tommy Tallarico make the sound?
The evidence supports describing the sound as associated in reporting with Messiah and Tallarico, but it does not conclusively establish who created it or who held the relevant rights. Roblox’s CD-ROM account is the company’s position in the dispute; it is not an independent determination of the original creator. The available sources do not establish a complete chain of authorship or a definitive legal resolution.

Why did Roblox remove “oof”?
Roblox said in 2022 that it removed the sound “due to a licensing issue” and introduced a replacement default sound. The company’s stated reason was a licensing issue; that statement does not, by itself, resolve the separate disagreement over the sound’s origins or ownership. Windows Central’s report covers the removal and later return.
Is the Roblox “oof” sound back?
Yes. Roblox announced in July 2025 that “oof” was back as the default death sound. The announcement title was ““OOF” is back as default sound on Roblox!” See Roblox’s July 2025 announcement.
