Xbox Says Project Helix Will Be a Family of Devices, but No Lineup Is Announced

Xbox’s reported Project Helix family-of-devices strategy signals a console first, but no Helix models or specific Game Pass changes have been announced.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has reportedly described Project Helix as a “family of devices” and said the next generation will have a console first. That signals a broader hardware strategy, not a confirmed list of products: Xbox has not announced how many Helix devices there will be, whether a handheld is planned, or when consumers can buy one. Sharma also hinted that Game Pass could become more flexible, but no specific service change has been announced.

What Xbox reportedly said about Project Helix

Windows Central reported on October 6, 2026, that it had obtained an internal Xbox town-hall transcript shared with the publication and verified by trusted sources. It is a report of internal remarks, not a transcript Microsoft has published publicly.

In that account, Sharma said: “We are moving to a family of devices for Gen-10. There is not one device that fits all. We will certainly have a great console first, but we also know that many players will be on the go.” She also said Xbox would share more as its plans develop. Windows Central’s town-hall report also attributes comments to Sharma about working with partners and the operating system starting to look good.

What Project Helix officially is—and what remains unknown

Xbox’s public description is more specific about the platform’s broad purpose than its hardware lineup. In a March 11, 2026 announcement, Xbox said Project Helix is a first-party next-generation console designed to play Xbox console and PC games, and that it is working with AMD on a custom system-on-chip. The announcement’s stated developer milestone is to begin shipping alpha versions of the hardware to developers in 2027; it does not give a consumer release date. Xbox Wire’s Project Helix announcement summarizes the aim as delivering “leading performance” for Xbox console and PC games.

#1 Best Overall
Xbox Series X | Disc Gaming Console | 1TB SSD
  • FASTEST, MOST POWERFUL XBOX — Experience next-generation performance with 12 teraflops of processing power, delivering smoother gameplay, richer worlds, and faster responsiveness than any previous XBOX.
  • TRUE 4K GAMING UP TO 120 FPS — Enjoy breathtaking visuals with true 4K resolution, HDR, and frame rates up to 120 FPS, plus hardware-accelerated ray tracing for a heightened level of realism.
  • 1TB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 1TB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
  • QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
  • FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X.

Calling Helix a “family” establishes a direction, not a retail catalog. The remarks do not establish the number of devices, their form factors, prices, or capabilities. A handheld is not confirmed, nor is a return to Series X|S-style performance tiers. The phrase “console first” suggests a console is central to the plan, but does not specify when it will launch.

Sharma has also described a “great family of devices for Project Helix” in a BBC interview, as reported by GamesRadar+. That reinforces the broad strategy, but does not add a confirmed model list or specifications. GamesRadar+’s account of the interview likewise leaves the actual options unspecified.

What the Game Pass hint does—and does not—promise

Windows Central says Sharma suggested Game Pass would become “more flexible for more players,” potentially allowing users to tailor content access. That is a reported direction, not a feature announcement. No new tier, price, game selection, rollout date, or subscription mechanism was specified in the town-hall report.

The hint arrives against a backdrop of a service reset. In a June 10, 2026 employee message, Xbox said Game Pass had started growing again after more than eight months of decline. Windows Central separately reported that the 2026 reset included removing Call of Duty from Game Pass and reducing the price. The latter details are reporting, while the growth statement is Xbox’s own account; neither confirms what the hinted flexibility will mean for subscribers. Xbox’s June reset message provides the company’s account of its priorities.

Why the “family” idea fits Xbox’s cross-device direction

Helix is being framed around access to both Xbox console and PC games, while Xbox has also pointed to play across devices as a broader goal. Its March 2026 announcement said Xbox Play Anywhere then covered more than 1,500 games and included 500 development teams that had shipped games with the program. Those are Xbox’s figures as of that announcement, not a promise that every Play Anywhere title—or every PC game—will run on every Helix device. They do not define Helix’s eventual compatibility list.

The practical takeaway is that Xbox is signaling more choice in how people access its games, while keeping the announced hardware plan anchored by a console. Until Microsoft publishes models and service details, claims about a particular handheld, multiple console specs, or a new Game Pass tier go beyond what has been confirmed.
