Final Fantasy Tactics has been around since 1997, when it debuted on PlayStation. The easiest way to play it today is FINAL FANTASY TACTICS – The Ivalice Chronicles, which Square Enix released on September 30, 2025 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The package contains two versions of the game: an Enhanced version with modern presentation and convenience features, and a Classic version that keeps the original 1997 graphics and gameplay.
What kind of game it is
Final Fantasy Tactics is a tactical role-playing game set in the fictional kingdom of Ivalice. Battles are turn-based, and Square Enix describes outcomes as shaped by terrain, unit positioning, turn order, and how you build your party. If you have played later strategy RPGs, the core loop will feel familiar, but the game’s emphasis on where each unit stands and what the ground offers is what sets the fights apart.
How characters grow: jobs and abilities
Characters learn jobs, and the abilities they pick up stay with them. Square Enix says that learned abilities can still be used after a character changes jobs, which means party building is a long-term project rather than a single choice. The publisher describes more than 20 jobs and hundreds of abilities in total.
- Positioning determines which enemies you can reach and which allies you can protect.
- Terrain affects how battles play out, so the map is part of the strategy.
- Turn order rewards planning several moves ahead rather than reacting turn by turn.
- Job changes let you reshape a character without losing abilities already learned.
The story in brief
The story opens during a succession crisis after Ivalice’s king dies and leaves a two-year-old heir. Rival dukes Goltanna and Larg both compete for power. The narrative follows Ramza Beoulve, a noble’s son, and Delita, his childhood companion, who is a commoner raised among nobles. Square Enix frames the story around ambition, class conflict, war, and political intrigue, and the two characters’ paths make those themes personal.

Along with the fine-tuning of several features and battle mechanics, the inclusion of the more accessible "Squire" difficulty setting makes the enhanced version an excellent starting point for first-time players. The classic version unites the graphics and gameplay of the original 1997 version with the renowned War of the Lions translation for a unique way to experience this beloved title.
- If you own the Nintendo Switch software in physical format, you can play the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition by downloading only the Upgrade Pack free of charge.
Square Enix North America Marketing Director Francis Santos called the original “one of the most beloved titles in the franchise, known for its rich story and deep, strategic gameplay” in a June 4, 2025 PlayStation Blog post. That is his characterization of the game’s reputation rather than a measured ranking.
