A fight is decided by a chain of steps: noticing a cue, choosing what to do, moving the crosshair, firing, and doing all of this while the game delivers the picture and processes the shot over a network. Positioning, prediction and team decisions often settle a fight before raw response speed matters.
What reaction time means in a tactical shooter
Reaction time is the elapsed time between recognizing a stimulus and beginning a response. In CS2 or VALORANT, the stimulus might be an opponent stepping into view, a utility landing, or an audio cue such as footsteps. The response might be a shot, a stop, a counter-peek, or a utility throw. Simple reaction tests strip all of this down to one visual change and one click, which is why they measure something narrower than game performance.
What the click benchmarks actually measure
Two figures from Insider Gaming’s February 27, 2025 article on the Human Benchmark website are often quoted. They measure different things, so they should not be compared with each other.
| Figure | What the task requires | Reported value | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple reaction test | Click when a red box turns green. No target identification, no mouse travel. | 273 ms median, 284 ms average, based on more than 81 million clicks | Insider Gaming, February 27, 2025, reporting the site’s results at that time |
| Aim-trainer task | Move the mouse to targets and click them. | 400 ms median | Insider Gaming, February 27, 2025 |
| Modeled peeker advantage in VALORANT | A peek in a networked match, under stated server and client buffering assumptions. | About 141 ms of extra time for the peeker relative to the defender in a simplified example | Riot Games, VALORANT netcode article |
| Decisive gunfight margin in VALORANT | Controlled peeking pairs of Riot’s highest-skilled, evenly matched players. | Often 20–50 ms | Riot Games, VALORANT netcode article |
The simple test figures are the site’s results as reported in 2025. They are not fixed human norms, and the article noted that input and monitor lag can affect a result. The aim-trainer median includes mouse movement, so it is not a faster or slower version of the same measurement.

Why a click score does not predict a duel
A won duel in a tactical shooter runs through several stages, and a simple test isolates only one of them:
- Perceive the cue. You see or hear something. A simple test covers this step only in its most basic form.
- Decide. You choose to fire, hold, back off, or re-peek. Decision quality depends on game sense and information, not reflex speed.
- Move the crosshair. Aim is a motor task toward a target that may be partly hidden, moving, or at an unusual angle.
- Fire and register. Recoil, spray patterns, movement inaccuracy and whether the hit registers all shape the result.
Two other factors often matter as much as the four stages. Prediction means you fire at a point where an opponent is likely to appear, so the fight starts before any cue. Crosshair placement means the target is already where you would need it when you react. A player with slower raw reactions who holds good angles and pre-aims can beat a faster player who is caught in the open.

How Riot models a peek in VALORANT
Riot’s engineering article on VALORANT netcode describes whether a peek succeeds in terms of the peeker’s and defender’s response times, the network round-trip time, and buffering on both sides. In its simplified example, the peeker gains roughly 141 ms of extra time relative to the defender under the server and client buffering assumptions the article states. That figure follows from those assumptions. It is not a measured value for every player, server or patch.
What Riot’s peeking experiments found
Riot reports experiments with pairs of its highest-skilled, evenly matched players, varied across server tick rates, network latencies, client frame rates and weapons. In those tests, gunfights often came down to 20–50 ms, and players could notice changes of about 10 ms in peeker advantage. These are VALORANT findings from a controlled playtest setting. They do not establish a general reaction-time benchmark for human players, and they say nothing direct about CS2.

Riot summarizes the point this way: “At the competitive level of play, very small advantages in reaction time can meaningfully change the outcome of combat.” Read that as Riot’s conclusion about its own competitive playtests.
Map geometry and peek design
The same article describes design factors that decide who wins a peek, independent of reaction speed. These include map geometry, the defender’s ability to watch several angles at once, the order in which a peeker’s shoulder and viewpoint become visible, movement inaccuracy, and hit tagging. A fast player who peeks a wide-open angle still gives up advantage to a defender who already has the crosshair there.

Frame rate, display and network delay
- Riot states that a higher client frame rate lets players see updates sooner. Its simplified example gives the peeker a smaller advantage at 144 FPS than at 60 FPS, while the article also discusses networking, buffering and client performance.
- Display and system latency are part of the timing you experience. The game’s frame rate, your monitor’s refresh rate and your network connection all affect when you see and act on an event.
- A high-refresh-rate gaming monitor is a reasonable category to consider when frame rate is the bottleneck. Its benefit depends on the monitor’s actual refresh rate, whether your GPU sustains high frame rates in the game, and the quality of your connection. A monitor does not change your reaction time or your rank by itself.
Can training improve reaction time?
A 2026 randomized controlled trial in BMC Psychology by Wenxiu Zheng and Hairong Zhang enrolled 184 competitive esports athletes aged 18–25. Over eight weeks, one group received an intervention combining aerobic exercise with cognitive self-regulation, and the comparison group received standard esports training. The authors report greater improvement in reaction-time and decision-making indicators, with small-to-moderate effect sizes. They also state: “However, further confirmatory trials are required.”
The trial supports cautious interest in integrated physical and cognitive training. It does not show that practicing a browser click test transfers to CS2 or VALORANT rank, and it does not establish a training dose for players who want to improve.

CS2 versus VALORANT
Riot’s detailed analysis covers VALORANT only. No comparable published study that we could find isolates raw reaction time as an independent predictor of rank in CS2 or in VALORANT. Claims that one game rewards reaction speed more than the other are therefore not supported by current evidence.
How to use a reaction test sensibly
- Compare only like with like. A simple click score, an aim-trainer score and an in-game peek timing measure different things.
- Record on the same device, monitor and refresh-rate setting. Input lag and display lag change the number.
- Treat any single run as noisy. Look at trends over many attempts.
- After a lost duel, ask whether the problem was reaction, aim, position or decision. Most lost rounds in these games are not reaction failures.
A test score can show whether your baseline is changing. It cannot tell you whether you will win the next peek.
