Snyder Trucking Warehouse is the best all-around home site for a developed community in the original State of Decay. Its nine facility spaces, four parking spaces, and eight outposts give you room to expand. For a new community, stay at the Church of the Ascension; choose McReady Farmhouse if nearby food matters most, or the remote Trumbull County Fairgrounds if you value its facilities over convenient travel.
How to choose a home site
Compare each location by the space and facilities it provides, the resources and outposts nearby, and how much travel its position demands. A larger base can support more development, but it does not necessarily make scavenging or missions easier. Zombies roam throughout Trumbull, so distance from town should not be treated as a guarantee of safety.
Prima Games’ 2021 guide says every home base has a built-in Radio Room, and that built-in facilities cannot be replaced or deconstructed. The figures and facilities below are those reported by that guide; check the site in your own save if a particular slot or requirement will determine your move. Prima Games’ home-base guide.

Which base fits your situation?
Starting out: Church of the Ascension
The Church is the default home after the tutorial and a practical place to begin. Its watchtower, kitchen, and medical area cover useful needs, while its central location avoids committing your early community to the long trips associated with more remote sites.

Growing your community: Kirkman Residence
Kirkman is a documented step up in facility capacity, with seven spaces and a built-in Workshop. Its Bedroom and Kitchen are fixed in place, however, so you have less choice over indoor facilities. Its distance from towns also makes it a less convenient base for frequent trips.
Prioritizing food: McReady Farmhouse
Choose McReady for the nearby farm food sources and its storage and sleeping facilities. The cost is travel: it is remote, and the guide specifically notes long drives for errands and scavenging.

Scavenging around Marshall: The Alamo or Snyder Warehouse
The Alamo puts you near Marshall’s resources and has a Watchtower, but the guide warns that infestations and hordes in town may reach the base. Snyder Warehouse is another Marshall-area option, with substantially more development space; its nearby outposts and resource variety are weaker points.
Late-game space: Trumbull County Fairgrounds
The Fairgrounds has a useful spread of built-in facilities, five parking spaces, and eight outposts. The guide calls it the largest home base but lists five facility spaces, so judge it by the specific facilities and room you need rather than the size label alone. Its remote position means longer trips.

Keep the game version straight
These recommendations concern the original State of Decay, not State of Decay 2. Bases such as Farmland Compound, Fort Marshall, and Checkpoint Delta belong to the later game and are not alternatives in this comparison. Undead Labs says the original game released in 2013 and was remastered in 2014 as State of Decay: Year-One Survival Edition, which includes the original game, Breakdown, and Lifeline.
