Where Is the Minecraft Mods Folder? Java Edition Paths for Windows, macOS and Linux

The default Java Edition mods folder is %appdata%.minecraftmods on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods on macOS and ~/.minecraft/mods on Linux. Launchers can use separate folders.

The default Minecraft: Java Edition mods folder is inside your .minecraft directory, but its exact location depends on your operating system and on which launcher profile you start. Use the path below for your system, then confirm that the profile you launch points to the same place.

Default mods folder locations

For the standard Java Edition setup, Fabric’s player guide lists these paths:

Operating system Default mods folder How to open it
Windows %appdata%.minecraftmods Press Win + R, paste the path, press Enter. Or type it into the File Explorer address bar.
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods In Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder (Shift + Command + G), paste the path, press Return.
Linux ~/.minecraft/mods Paste the path into your file manager’s location field. Hidden folders may need to be shown first (Ctrl + H in most file managers).

On Windows, %appdata% expands to your Roaming folder, normally C:Users[your name]AppDataRoaming. The .minecraft folder itself is hidden on macOS and Linux because its name starts with a dot or sits inside a hidden library folder, so typing the full path is faster than browsing.

If your launcher uses a separate folder

Many players never open the default folder because their launcher keeps each modded setup in its own directory. The folder you need is the mods directory inside the game directory of the profile you actually start. Adding mods to .minecraft will do nothing if the profile you launch points elsewhere.

CurseForge

The CurseForge app creates its own modding environment, and you can choose a different location in its Advanced settings. Its standard root folders are:

  • Windows: C:Users[user]curseforgeminecraft
  • macOS: /Users/[user]/Documents/curseforge/minecraft/
  • Linux: /home/[user]/Documents/curseforge/minecraft

Open the folder for the instance you play, then look for its mods directory. If you moved the location in Advanced settings, the root folder will be the one you chose.

Modrinth and other launchers

Modrinth’s help center has separate articles on where its app stores data and where individual instances live. Check those for the profile you use. Third-party launchers each have their own documentation, and the instance or profile settings screen usually shows the game directory. If you cannot find it, that screen is the first place to look.

If there is no mods folder

A missing mods folder is common in a fresh installation, or when you are working in a profile that has never loaded a mod loader. To set one up manually:

  1. Confirm you are in the game directory of the profile you launch, not just the default .minecraft folder.
  2. Create a new folder named mods in that directory. The name is lowercase, with no spaces.
  3. Copy your mod .jar files into that folder.
  4. Launch the matching modded profile. The mod should appear in the game’s mods list if it loaded.

Match each mod to your version and loader

Putting a file in the right folder is only half the job. A mod must match three things in the active profile: the Minecraft edition (Java), the exact game version, and the mod loader, such as Fabric, Forge, NeoForge or Quilt. A file placed in the correct folder may still not load if it was built for another version or loader. Bedrock Edition is not covered by these instructions.

Troubleshooting a mod that does not load

  • The mod is missing from the game: you may have placed it in the default .minecraftmods folder while launching a separate profile. Find the game directory of the profile you start.
  • The game does not start after adding a mod: check that the mod’s version matches your Minecraft version and that its loader matches your profile’s loader.
  • The file does not appear in the folder: confirm that the download finished and that the file name ends in .jar.

Mojang’s help states that these mods are not created, reviewed or endorsed by Mojang Studios, and that Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues caused by mod usage. For mod-specific problems, contact the mod’s author or the community that distributes it.
