Urzikstan is not a real country, so it has no location on a current political map. It is a fictional setting in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and a map in Call of Duty: Warzone. Its regional cues have prompted comparisons with the Middle East, including Syria and Iraq, but no confirmed real-world counterpart is established.
What is Urzikstan?
Urzikstan is a fictional country in the Modern Warfare story. The franchise also uses the name for a Warzone map. Activision’s map announcement describes the game environment and its points of interest; it does not place the fictional country at real-world coordinates.
Why did Call of Duty make it fictional?
In a 2019 GameSpot interview, Infinity Ward narrative director Taylor Kurosaki said the developers avoided naming a real country rather than reducing a complex real-world situation to the game’s simplified version. He explained: “But the one thing that we’ve done is–we’ve not specifically said, our main theater of war in our game takes place in a country where we’re calling Urzikstan.”
Kurosaki also said: “But if we called a country by the real name of a country that exists today, then we would undoubtedly be giving short shrift to these incredibly complex situations that we are in some ways simplifying so that they’re more easily grockable.” That is the developers’ stated reason for fictionalization; it does not establish a hidden one-to-one location.

What real places is Urzikstan based on?
Some observers interpret the setting through real Middle Eastern references, including Syria and Iraq. A 2022 academic article, “Reproduction of Islamophobia in a Digital Cloak: An Analysis on Digital War Game ‘Call of Duty’”, discusses those connections. They are scholarly interpretation, not official confirmation that Urzikstan is any particular country.
A 2019 TIME profile says Farah Karim evokes Kurdish women’s forces active in northern Syria. That comparison concerns a character’s resemblance; it is not an official geographic key to Urzikstan. Activision’s character biographies provide official narrative information about Farah and Urzikstan, but do not identify the country as a real place.

Does the Warzone map show where the country is?
No. Urzikstan’s in-game layout and landmarks describe a designed map, not a confirmed real-world location. Raven Software’s discussion of its design and lessons from earlier maps in Xbox Wire is about building the play space. Map resemblance or fan-created placements cannot turn the fictional setting into official real-world geography.
