Verdansk is not a real place. It is the fictional city at the center of Call of Duty: Warzone, and its developers have said they looked at Donetsk, a real city in eastern Ukraine, along with other similar cities while building it. The accurate way to put it is that Verdansk was inspired in part by Donetsk. It is not an exact replica of Donetsk, and it is not a stand-in for Ukraine.
What the developers have said about Donetsk
The clearest on-record statement comes from Patrick Kelly, a Warzone developer, as reported by The Washington Post in its April 20, 2021 article “‘Call of Duty: Warzone’: The origins of Verdansk.” Kelly said: “We looked a lot at Donetsk, Ukraine, and we looked at other cities, similar cities, and we started talking about it.”
That quote contains two points that are easy to lose. First, Donetsk was one of several reference cities, not the only one. Second, the statement describes the team’s early discussions about the setting. It does not describe a street-by-street or building-by-building reconstruction.
What is and is not established
Readers often treat “inspired by” as shorthand for “copied from.” The sources support a narrower reading. The table below separates the claims that hold up from the ones that go further than the evidence.

| Claim | Status | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Verdansk is a fictional city in Call of Duty: Warzone | Established | Activision’s official Warzone recon tour, March 26, 2025 |
| Developers looked at Donetsk, Ukraine, while developing the map | Established as a developer statement | Patrick Kelly, quoted by The Washington Post, April 20, 2021 |
| Donetsk was one of several similar cities studied | Established as a developer statement | Same Washington Post report |
| Verdansk is an exact copy of Donetsk | Not supported | No cited source says this |
| Specific in-game landmarks match specific real Donetsk sites one-to-one | Not established | No cited source confirms individual landmark matches |
The practical takeaway is that Donetsk shaped the setting’s feel and general layout ideas in the developers’ account, while the finished map is a fictional composition. Any claim that a particular stadium, airport or street is a real-world match needs its own evidence, and the sources used here do not provide it.
Where Verdansk sits inside the game
Within the game world, Verdansk is a city map with named areas. Activision’s official recon tour, published March 26, 2025, documents several of its points of interest, including:

Activision’s official Tac Atlas, a 2025 interactive guide, lists 296 total points of interest, 21 of them major. These are in-game counts from the official guide, not real-world geography.
Verdansk’s in-game timeline is separate from real history. Activision’s April 22, 2021 overview, “Welcome to the New Warzone: An Overview of Verdansk ’84,” describes a revised version of the city set in the game’s 1984 timeline. That is fictional chronology within the game, not a claim about a real city that existed in that year.

Can you play Verdansk now?
Activision announced Verdansk’s return to Warzone on March 26, 2025, for April 3, 2025, and described it as the original free-to-play Warzone map. Those announcements establish the return date and the map’s history. They do not establish which maps are in rotation today. Before assuming Verdansk is available, check the current playlist list in Warzone or the official Call of Duty website, since map availability changes between seasons.

If you are asking where Verdansk is on a map, it is nowhere: it is a fictional city. If you are asking what real place influenced it, the developer-confirmed answer is Donetsk, Ukraine, alongside other similar cities. The resemblance is a matter of broad inspiration, and the sources do not support treating the map as a literal copy of Donetsk.
