Your geographically closest option is the right starting point, but it is not always the fastest. ISP routing, congestion, peering problems, and temporary CDN issues can make a neighboring or even farther region perform better.
On Windows and Linux, open Steam → Settings → Downloads → Download Region, choose an alternative, then pause and resume the transfer. Restarting Steam is the more reliable way to ensure the new selection is being used.

What Steam’s Download Region actually does
The Download Region setting chooses the Steam content-server/CDN region used to deliver game downloads and updates. Steam normally detects your region and selects content servers there, which is intended to provide good performance under ordinary conditions. Valve recommends temporarily switching regions if your local servers are slow, overloaded, or experiencing hardware problems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIt is a download-server preference—not a general account-location setting. Changing it does not change your Steam store country, account region, currency, or ownership of games. See Valve’s Steam download-region guidance for the official explanation.

How to change the setting
- Open the Steam client.
- Select Steam in the top-left corner.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Downloads.
- Use the Download Region dropdown.
- Select a nearby alternative and close Settings.
If a download was already running, pause and resume it. If Steam continues using the old route or the transfer remains stuck, exit and restart Steam before testing again.
How to choose the fastest region
There is no universally best Steam region. The best choice is the one that provides the highest sustained throughput with the fewest stalls on your current connection.
Start with your local region, then compare several nearby or neighboring entries. Test them under similar conditions: the same game or update, the same wired or Wi-Fi connection, no competing large downloads, and the same VPN status. Judge each option over several minutes rather than relying on one brief speed spike.

| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Sustained download speed | A region that remains fast is more useful than one that briefly peaks higher. |
| Stalls and interruptions | Repeated pauses can indicate congestion, routing trouble, or an impaired CDN path. |
| Recovery after a stall | A stable region should resume normally without repeated manual intervention. |
| Consistency across downloads | One file may use a different content path, so confirm the result with the actual game or update you need. |
Geographic distance is only a starting point. ISP routing and peering can make a nearby region slower than a more distant one, while peak-time congestion can affect an otherwise good location. For additional context, see this explanation of Steam region selection and network routing.
When changing region can fix “No Internet Connection”
Steam’s store or community pages can load normally while a download or update reports No Internet Connection. That pattern can indicate a problem with the particular content-server route rather than a total loss of internet access.
In that situation, switch to a nearby alternative and restart the download. Community reports have described downloads recovering after users moved from US – Seattle to entries such as US – San Jose, Sacramento, or Denver. These reports show that a region-specific failure is possible; they do not prove that Seattle—or any other region—is permanently unavailable or currently broken for everyone.

Reports have also described cases where new downloads failed but updates worked, or updates failed while new downloads worked. Different content requests and CDN paths can fail independently, so a partial failure does not necessarily identify one universal Steam problem.

Changing the Download Region is a targeted CDN workaround, not a cure for every Steam download problem. If several regions behave the same way, investigate other causes:
- Restart Steam: Fully exit the client, reopen it, and retry the download.
- Check local storage: Confirm that the destination drive has free space and is healthy. A disk bottleneck can look like a network slowdown.
- Check security software: Verify that Windows Firewall, antivirus software, or security filtering is not blocking Steam or its download traffic.
- Test the connection: Compare wired and Wi-Fi connections, reboot network equipment, and check whether other devices are consuming bandwidth.
- Consider DNS or ISP problems: If other services are also unreliable, the fault may be outside Steam’s CDN selection.
- Clear Steam’s download cache carefully: This can help with certain client-state problems, but it is not guaranteed to fix a region or service outage.
On Windows, the following commands are sometimes used for basic DHCP and DNS troubleshooting. Open Command Prompt and run them separately:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew
These are Windows network commands, not Steam commands. Releasing and renewing the address may briefly interrupt connectivity, and the commands will not fix a full Steam service outage, a failing drive, or an ISP routing problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using a VPN
A VPN changes your network exit point and can change which Steam region performs best. Test regions with the VPN either consistently enabled or consistently disabled; otherwise you may mistake VPN latency, packet loss, or congestion for a problem with Steam’s selected region.
If downloads are slower only when the VPN is active, disconnecting it may help. If the VPN is required, select a Download Region that performs well from the VPN server’s location—not necessarily the region closest to your home.

Common mistakes
“Always choose the closest region”
Not necessarily. The nearest region is the sensible first choice, and Steam normally selects your detected region automatically, but actual performance depends on routing, congestion, and server health. Test nearby alternatives when the default is slow.
“Changing region changes my store country”
It does not. Download Region is located under Steam’s Downloads settings and controls where files are served from. Store-country and account-region mechanisms are separate.
“A new selection instantly moves the active download”
Not reliably. Pause and resume first; restart Steam if the transfer continues to use the old path or remains stuck.

A practical decision rule
- Leave Steam on the automatically selected local region if downloads are stable and fast.
- If performance is poor, test two or three nearby regions.
- Keep the region with the best sustained speed and fewest stalls.
- If only one game or update fails, test another region and restart Steam.
- If all regions fail, stop treating the problem as a simple region choice and check storage, firewall, DNS, ISP, VPN, and Steam-service causes.
Region performance can change over time. A location that is best today may be congested tomorrow, so you can return to the automatic or local region when conditions improve.
