None of the cited policies provides a PS2-specific authenticity test, so a refund policy should not be mistaken for proof that a disc is genuine.
Where can you buy rare PS2 games safely?
There is no single safest marketplace for every transaction. The better choice depends on whether the exact title and edition are listed, what evidence the seller provides, how much the completed order will cost, and what remedy is available if the item differs from its listing. PriceCharting operates a video-game marketplace and publishes a seller return guarantee. eBay and Mercari have their own dispute processes, but their protections are conditional and their deadlines differ.

Use a marketplace’s protection as a way to seek a remedy when an eligible transaction goes wrong, not as a guarantee that a rare game has been independently examined. The cited eBay Authenticity Guarantee categories do not include video games, and none of the policies described here sets out a procedure for authenticating PS2 discs.
| Marketplace | What its cited policy says | Practical point to check |
|---|---|---|
| PriceCharting | Its marketplace page says buyers are guaranteed delivery of the ordered item or their money back. Sellers must offer a 14-day money-back return period measured from shipment; buyers pay return shipping. The marketplace says it supports the US and Canada. (PriceCharting marketplace policy, inspected October 13, 2026.) | Confirm the exact game is in its database, review the return terms, and account for return postage. The page says reproductions and fakes cannot be sold. |
| eBay | Its Money Back Guarantee may cover eligible purchases when the received item does not match its listing, subject to the policy’s case and return requirements. The policy also describes handling for counterfeit indicators. (eBay Money Back Guarantee policy.) | Use the order’s live case instructions and deadlines. The cited Authenticity Guarantee category page lists other product categories, not video games; do not assume a PS2 game receives that service. |
| Mercari | Buyers have 72 hours after confirmed delivery to report an item that is not as described. If there is no report or rating during that period, payment is automatically released. An approved return must be shipped within three days. (Mercari Buyer Protection policy, inspected October 13, 2026.) | Inspect the order promptly and follow the in-app process before the applicable deadline. |
These are policy descriptions, not a promise that every complaint will be approved. Read the terms shown on the specific listing and order: eligibility, required steps, and return instructions matter. Keep payment and communication on the marketplace so the transaction can be evaluated under its stated process.

- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
How to compare a listing before you buy
A listing for a scarce game can look compelling while leaving important details unclear. Compare like with like: the exact title and edition, what is included, the actual condition, shipping, return terms, and total checkout price. A price guide or current asking price is a reference point, not proof of a completed sale value and not evidence that the item is authentic.
- Identify the exact release. Search using the full game title and any edition or release details relevant to the listing. Make sure the description, photographs, and selected listing option refer to the same item. If an edition distinction affects what you want, ask the seller to confirm it and show identifying details rather than relying on a vague title.
- Check what is included. Determine whether the offer is for a disc alone or includes a case, cover art, and manual. Do not infer completeness from a category label or a photograph that may show more than the seller is offering.
- Inspect the evidence in the listing. Look for clear photographs of the actual item and its condition. Generic stock images, limited views, or vague descriptions such as “good condition” leave unanswered questions. Ask for additional photos before paying if a detail matters to your decision.
- Review seller feedback and transaction history. Consider whether the seller has relevant history and whether the listing gives a coherent account of the item. Feedback is context, not a guarantee of authenticity or a substitute for reading the listing.
- Calculate the delivered total. Include the item price, buyer fees where applicable, and shipping. Compare that total—not just the displayed price—with other offers for the same edition and contents.
- Read the return and dispute rules before checkout. Note the relevant clock, required reporting method, and any return-shipping responsibility. A short window is especially important if delivery may occur when you cannot inspect the package.
- Keep the transaction on-platform. Do not follow pressure to pay elsewhere or move the conversation off the marketplace. Use the platform’s payment flow and retain the order and listing records.
If a seller cannot answer a material question, the safest decision may be to wait for a clearer listing. Scarcity does not make unclear evidence better, and urgency from a seller is not a reason to surrender the marketplace’s normal payment or dispute process.
What to do when the game arrives
Open and inspect the order promptly rather than saving it for later. Compare what arrived with the listing and preserve the packaging and transaction records until you have decided the item matches what you bought. If there is a problem, report it through the marketplace’s stated process while the applicable window is open.

- Drive through the largest GTA environment ever -- The game has three cities players can explore, for a gaming area 5 times larger than Vice City
- Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles
- Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
- New graphics elements as cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them
- Advanced role-playing elements -- Unlike previous GTA characters, Carl can swim and he needs to eat to survive
- Check that the delivered title and edition match the order.
- Compare the included case, manual, and other listed contents with the listing.
- Review the item’s condition against the photographs and description.
- Save the listing, order details, messages, and any photos you take of a discrepancy.
- If the item is not as described, use the marketplace’s order or claim flow instead of negotiating an off-platform refund.
For Mercari, the cited Buyer Protection policy gives buyers 72 hours after confirmed delivery to report an item that is not as described. Without a report or rating, payment is automatically released after that window; after a return is approved, the buyer must ship it within three days. Do not assume a message to the seller alone counts as filing a report—follow the policy’s actual in-app instructions.
For PriceCharting, the published seller money-back guarantee is 14 days from shipment, and the buyer is responsible for return shipping. That start point is shipment, not delivery, so check the transaction dates and policy rather than assuming the period begins when the package arrives. For eBay, follow the case and return requirements shown for the eligible order; the Money Back Guarantee is subject to those procedures.
Can you tell whether a PS2 game is authentic?
The marketplace policies discussed here do not establish a PS2-specific test for distinguishing an original disc or edition from a reproduction. They also do not show that a particular PS2 listing has been physically authenticated. eBay’s cited Authenticity Guarantee page names categories such as watches, shoes, apparel, handbags and luxury accessories, trading cards, jewelry, and coins; it does not list video games. Do not treat a game’s presence on a marketplace, a seller’s use of the word “authentic,” or a general buyer-protection policy as independent verification.

You can still reduce uncertainty by asking for clear photographs of the actual item and the details that identify the release being offered. Check that the seller’s description, edition claim, and included materials agree with one another. If the seller cannot provide enough evidence to answer a question important to you, do not rely on a policy dispute as a substitute for verification before purchase.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Descriptions such as “tested” also need context. Ask what the seller means and what was actually checked; do not assume that a claim of testing verifies an edition or establishes authenticity. Likewise, a clean-looking listing is not a certification. The evidence available in the policies covered here supports careful listing review and use of eligible remedies, not a definitive visual authentication checklist.
How to sell rare PS2 games with fewer disputes
A strong listing makes the offered item and its condition easy to understand. Photograph the actual game rather than relying on a stock image. Show the disc, case, manual, and identifying details relevant to the edition, and state clearly which pieces are included. Describe visible condition accurately and explain what you have and have not tested.

- There's all-new non-player character animations, with superior 3D details -- even full facial expressions and lip synchs
- Use 20 authentic WWII weapons, from a Colt. 45 pistol to a German Panzerschrenk rocket launcher
- You can even drive vehicles like the motorized rail car, train, and mine cart
- Document the item. Take clear photographs of the actual disc and everything included. Keep your own records of the item’s condition before packing.
- Write a precise description. Name the title and edition as accurately as you can, list included components, and describe condition without overstating it. Avoid claims such as “authentic” or “tested” unless you can support them.
- Set a defensible price. Compare the exact edition and contents rather than treating any asking price or price-guide figure as a confirmed sale value.
- Check marketplace eligibility and fees. Confirm that your account can list the item and calculate the amount you will retain after applicable processing or selling charges.
- Keep records and ship carefully. Use the marketplace’s shipping process, retain tracking information, and keep evidence of the item’s condition and packing. These are prudent recordkeeping steps; no cited policy guarantees that a particular photo or document will decide a dispute.
Keep messages, payment, and shipping documentation within the marketplace. If a buyer raises an issue, respond through its order or case process and meet the stated deadlines. Clear records help explain what was listed and sent, but they do not replace accurate disclosure or ensure a particular outcome.

Marketplace costs can change the best option for both sides. Compare the checkout total as a buyer and the expected net proceeds as a seller; a zero listing fee does not necessarily mean a zero-cost sale.

| Marketplace and situation | Published cost or requirement | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| PriceCharting seller | PriceCharting says account creation, listing, and selling are free, but PayPal payment-processing fees still apply. Sellers need a PayPal business account and must live in the US or Canada. (PriceCharting selling policy.) | Include processing fees when estimating net proceeds. The marketplace says new or low-reputation sellers may be restricted from listing very high-value items. |
| PriceCharting buyer | The marketplace says it currently supports the US and Canada. It says shipping is free within the US, with shipping costs included in the item price. (PriceCharting marketplace policy, inspected October 13, 2026.) | Check the item’s listed price and the order’s delivery terms; do not assume the same shipping arrangement applies outside the stated US detail. |
| Mercari listing created or updated on or after January 6, 2025 | Mercari states a buyer protection fee of 3.6% of item price plus buyer-paid shipping, and a seller fee of 10% of those amounts. (Mercari Fees page.) | Check the actual checkout total and seller payout for the listing. Older listings that have not been updated may retain different transition fees. |
Mercari’s fee figures apply to listings created or updated on or after January 6, 2025; they should not be generalized to an older, unupdated listing. For any marketplace, use the terms and totals shown for the transaction rather than relying on an old estimate.

Choosing between the marketplaces
Choose PriceCharting when a game-focused marketplace fits
PriceCharting is the option in this comparison explicitly organized around video games. Its marketplace says an item must be in its database and that reproductions and fakes cannot be sold. Its published policy describes the buyer guarantee, 14-day seller return period from shipment, and US/Canada availability. Sellers should separately check the selling requirements, PayPal processing costs, and any restrictions affecting high-value listings.
Use eBay with the general protection rules in mind
eBay’s Money Back Guarantee may apply to an eligible purchase that does not match its listing, including cases involving counterfeit indicators, but the policy requires buyers to follow its claim and return procedures. Its Authenticity Guarantee category page does not list video games, so the existence of that service for other categories should not be read as an expert authentication service for a PS2 title.
Use Mercari only if you can meet the short reporting window
Mercari’s 72-hour not-as-described reporting period begins after confirmed delivery. That timing makes prompt inspection and attention to delivery confirmation important. Buyers and sellers should also account for the applicable fee terms, including the distinct terms stated for listings created or updated on or after January 6, 2025.

Whichever option you choose, assess the specific listing and order rather than the marketplace name alone. A platform can provide a route to a remedy without establishing that a particular rare game is genuine or that a dispute will be decided in your favor.
