For a PS3 game you don’t already own, the official digital route is the PlayStation Store on the PS3 itself, and only while that store is still open in your country. Sony has announced phased closures of the PS3 Store, starting in selected markets in 2026 and reaching most other countries in July 2027. Games you have already bought are expected to stay downloadable after the closure date, so the practical question is usually whether you are buying something new or redownloading something you own.
Buying a new PS3 game
New purchases depend on two things: the PS3 Store must still be open in your region, and your account must have wallet funds, because the PS3 Store does not accept direct card or PayPal payment. Sony’s support page says that since October 27, 2021, users cannot pay directly with a credit or debit card or PayPal on the PS3 Store.

- Confirm your regional status. Check your country’s localized PlayStation Store or Sony support page before buying. Sony’s closure schedule is set by market group (see the regional section below).
- Add wallet funds through a supported route. Sony lists PlayStation Store gift cards as one option, along with adding funds from a desktop or mobile device, a PS4, or a PS5.
- Buy on the console. From the PS3 home menu, open the PlayStation Store and purchase the title with your wallet balance.
A gift card only helps while the regional store is open. Once the PS3 Store has closed in your region, a card cannot be used to make new PS3 purchases there.
Redownloading games you already bought
Sony’s July 1, 2026 announcement, from Sid Shuman, Senior Director, SIE Content Communications, says: “players will still be able to download previously purchased content after the closing date for the foreseeable future.” The phrase “for the foreseeable future” is Sony’s own wording and does not set an end date.

This is not the same as access to buy. Redownloads of owned content are the only PS3 Store activity Sony says will continue after closure. Sony’s announcement does not describe the exact on-console steps for redownloading after a regional closure, so check your localized support page for the current process.
Do not follow Sony’s general online download instructions for PS4 and PS5 when trying to get a PS3 title. Those instructions do not establish that PS3 games can be newly downloaded from the web or the PS App.

Closure timing by region
Sony’s July 1, 2026 announcement describes closures in groups rather than giving a complete country-by-country list. The table below reflects those group dates.

If you are unsure which situation applies, start with the ownership question. A game you already bought is a redownload, and a game you have not bought yet is a new purchase that depends on your region’s closure status.
Sony’s announcement does not state a regional buying cutoff for every country, so verify your region before assuming a purchase will work.
