The earliest reliable place to look for Fire-type Pokémon in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is the Grand Underground’s Volcanic Caves. After reaching Eterna City, get the Explorer Kit from the Underground Man; then search Volcanic Caves for Vulpix and Ponyta in either game, plus Growlithe in Brilliant Diamond or Magby in Shining Pearl. Spacious Caves are another early option for Houndoom.
How to reach the Grand Underground
- Go to Eterna City and speak with the Underground Man in the house next to the Pokémon Center.
- Accept the Explorer Kit. You can then enter the Grand Underground and explore its Pokémon Hideaways. The Pokémon Company says exploration becomes available once you reach Eterna City: The Grand Underground.
Early Fire-type Pokémon by game
Once you have access, enter the named Hideaways and look for these encounters. The official guide identifies them as early-adventure options but does not give encounter odds, so a particular Pokémon may take more than one visit to find.

Can you get Chimchar if you chose another starter?
Yes. After obtaining the National Pokédex, Fire-type first partners become available in suitable Grand Underground Hideaways. The official guide points to Volcanic Caves and Typhlo Cavern for later starter encounters, including Charmander, Cyndaquil, Torchic, and Chimchar. See the Pokémon Company’s Pokémon Trainer Fundamentals guide for the post-National Pokédex progression context.

A Fire Stone is an evolution item, not a Pokémon or a place to catch one. The Grand Underground guide lists Fire Stones among its treasures and says they evolve certain Pokémon. If you are looking for a Pokémon to add to your team, search a Hideaway instead.
