There are 18 Spool Fragments in Hollow Knight: Silksong. Every two fragments form one Spool and increase Hornet’s maximum Silk capacity by one, so collecting the full set adds nine capacity. Six are available in Act 1 and twelve in Act 2. Spoilers: this guide names late-game regions, quests, merchants, and movement requirements.
Act 1 Spool Fragments
These six can be collected in Act 1. Region names and landmarks are used below because walkthroughs number some pickups differently.
Bone Bottom: mossy room above town
Take the upper-left gate near Shakra and follow the long green room toward the small room by the elevator. In the dead-end area with floor spikes, look for a breakable wall. No ability requirement is listed for this pickup. Source: Hollow Knight Wiki; Nintendo Life route reference.
Deep Docks: central lava room
From Forge Daughter, take the southwest exit and descend the vertical room. Use the first east exit into the large room with burning or solidified-lava platforms. Cross to the far side and flip the lever, then return and use the changed platforms to reach the upper shelf. No ability requirement is listed. Greymoor: balloon route above Shakra’s bench
Cling Grip is listed as required to enter the passage above Shakra’s bench. Reach it by wall-jumping near Halfway Home, then travel east and pull the lever that releases balloons. Bellhart: Frey’s shop

Weavenest Atla: passage near Marrowmaws
Needolin opens access to Weavenest Atla. After using the teleporter to reach the lower section, climb the east wall and head west. Jump to the higher passage near the first Marrowmaw, pass the next enemy, and drop down to the fragment. Source: Hollow Knight Wiki.
The Slab: upper outdoor section
Prerequisites listed are Cling Grip and access to The Slab. From the Bellway station, ascend two levels to the large room. Wall-climb from the west side and cross the cage tops without entering the westernmost chamber. Enter the ceiling passage, travel west through the traps, then climb to the outdoor section. Act 2 Spool Fragments
Twelve more fragments are listed in Act 2. Several require later movement abilities, keys, wishes, or caravan progress, so treat those prerequisites as a backtracking checklist.
Grand Gate: scales at the top
Reach the top of Grand Gate. From below, strike the scale platforms upward to tip them, then continue to the fragment. Source: Hollow Knight Wiki.
Underworks: central combat gauntlet
From Ventrica Station, head south and then west. Fight through the enemy gauntlet and continue west to claim the fragment. Nintendo Life describes the reward as following waves of workers. Source: Hollow Knight Wiki; Nintendo Life route reference.
Fleamaster Mooshka: caravan reward
The reward depends on caravan progress: the inventory reference lists the caravan reaching Grand Gate, while Nintendo Life describes collecting it from Mooshka after the caravan moves to Blasted Steps. Both sources list finding 12 fleas and defeating the Last Judge as requirements. Check the caravan’s current area and speak with Mooshka once those conditions are met. Whiteward: below the lift
The White Key is required. Call the lift using the upper buttons, then quickly descend the shaft. Duck into a side passage to let the lift pass, and continue below its usual stopping point to find the fragment. Source: Hollow Knight Wiki; Nintendo Life route reference.
Cogwork Core: lower southeast
In the lower southeast section, defeat or avoid the Cogwork Clapper and continue east and downward. The inventory reference notes that this enemy does not appear in Act 3. Source: Hollow Knight Wiki.
Underworks: lower-right room east of the Cauldron
Head east from the Cauldron and descend the vertical shaft to a small room with a burning floor. Break the wall on the left to reach this second Underworks fragment. The area description distinguishes it from the central gauntlet pickup. Source: Hollow Knight Wiki.
Whiteward: Sherma’s reward

Deep Docks: southeastern locked-gate challenge
Clawline and Cling Grip are required; Faydown Cloak makes the route easier. In the southeast, use Clawline at the locked gate and open the hatch. Descend, grapple to the far wall, and break the explosive rock. Continue through the spikes, lava, and further explosive rocks to reach the fragment beyond the locked door. High Halls: highest point of the left vertical room
Faydown Cloak and Clawline are listed prerequisites; Silk Soar can bypass the challenge. Climb the left vertical room to its highest point and break the glass dome. Nintendo Life describes the ascent as involving rotating rings and enemies. Source: Hollow Knight Wiki; Nintendo Life route reference.
Memorium: western section

Grindle’s shop

- Movement or key-gated: Leave routes requiring Cling Grip, Clawline, Faydown Cloak, Silk Soar, the White Key, or access to The Slab and Weavenest Atla until you have the relevant ability or key.
- Progress-gated: Frey, Sherma, Jubilana, and Mooshka’s reward each depend on a wish, collection milestone, or caravan progress.
- Combat or platforming: The Underworks gauntlet, Whiteward lift timing, Greymoor balloons, and Deep Docks challenge are likely to take more effort than a straightforward shop visit.
- Rosary purchases: The three shop fragments cost 270 at Frey, 500 at Jubilana, and 680 at Grindle.
Why fragment numbers differ between guides
Hollow Knight Wiki and Nintendo Life use different ordinal numbers for some locations: for example, Grand Gate is #7 in the wiki inventory but #10 in Nintendo Life, while Cogwork Core is #11 in the wiki and #7 in Nintendo Life. Match pickups by region and landmark rather than a guide’s item number.
Version note
The Hollow Knight Wiki update history associates version 1.0.28891 (Patch 3) with a fix for cases in which a player could immediately quit after collecting an item and permanently miss some Spool Fragments.
