Find the first set in the mission’s opening area, the second in the Green Room after the red jumping puzzle, and the third on the upper level just before you drop into the final boss room. Destroy them with Whisper of the Worm equipped. Shooting the larger ordinary Blights in the combat rooms will not advance the step.
Where each set is
The written location descriptions do not give an exact landmark for every individual Blight in each set. The landmarks below will get you to each area and the right type of target. For orb-by-orb positions, watch a location video that shows all three sets in sequence.

First set: the opening area
Search the opening area before you advance toward the Taken Phalanx and drop through the hole. The targets are small and bright, and they sit in the very first spawn area. The first one is below and to the right of the platform area. After you shoot it, the remaining targets of this set are in the opening section, so keep searching there before you move on.
Second set: the Green Room
Continue through the red jumping puzzle to the Green Room, a rubble-and-grass chamber. Search the room before you take the way onward. One guide describes the layout as one target in front, a second higher up behind it, and a third overhead in the same room.

Third set: above the boss-room drop
Reach the upper area before you drop into the final boss room. Look to the right, then up and to the left, then across the open area. Destroy all of this set before you drop down, because you cannot return to them from the boss room.
Why other Blights do not count
- Only the small glowing targets count. The larger Taken Blights in the first major combat room look similar at a glance, and they are the most common reason a step fails to progress. Bungie community troubleshooting makes the same distinction between the small quest objects and the large Blights.
- Whisper of the Worm is required. The special targets can only be destroyed with this Exotic sniper rifle, so other weapons will not complete the step.
- Break the whole set in one run. A video guide states that all three Blights in a set need to be broken in the same run. If a set is partly done, plan to clear the full set again.
Difficulty and activity route
Older guides instruct you to complete the mission on Legend, and that wording has since changed. The current quest text describes two routes: completing The Whisper in Pinnacle Ops with an A-or-better performance grade, or launching it from the Legends subscreen on Expert difficulty. Read the active quest description in your Quest menu before you queue, because older location guides still show the Legend wording.

What these quests do and do not reward
Whispers of the Taken are tied to selectable third-column weapon perks. The White Nail intrinsic upgrades are not part of these quests, though. A Bungie community reply clarifies that those upgrades come from shooting Oracles, so do not expect Whispers progress to advance them.
