Borderlands 4 has nine Vault Key Fragments, three in each of its three regions: The Fadefields, Carcadia Burn, and Terminus Range. Each region’s three fragments form a separate set. Collect all three in one region and that region’s Vault appears on the map. Fragments cannot be mixed between regions, so a Fadefields fragment will not help with a Carcadia Burn Vault.
How the fragment sets work
- Nine fragments in total. PC Gamer’s Borderlands 4 Vault Key Fragment guide, last updated September 24, 2025, lists nine fragments across three Kairos Vaults.
- Three per region, kept separate. Each region’s fragments unlock only that region’s Vault.
- What a fragment looks like. Shacknews’ guide by Sam Chandler (September 11, 2025) describes it as a dark brown, almost black, chunk of rock with yellow lightning arcing over it.
- Tracking. Approaching a fragment reveals a circle marking its search area. An on-screen proximity bar fills as you get closer, per the same Shacknews guide.
- Silos are optional. Order Silos are not required to find fragments, although lifts from a few silos can make some routes shorter.
The directions below follow the landmarks reported in those 2025 guides. Patches after that date could move or rename a landmark. If a description doesn’t match what you see, use the proximity bar and the nearest named landmark to home in on the spot.
The Fadefields
Coastal Bonescape (Stillshore)
In the southwest corner of Coastal Bonescape, find the island by the water in Stillshore. The fragment sits on a crate at the base of a tower. PC Gamer notes that a bounty contract available after the prologue can lead you into this area.
The Howl
Find the small cave northeast of The Launch Pad and southwest of Ardor’s Bounty. The fragment rests on a pedestal inside. When approaching from the main road north of the settlement, the odd-shaped pillars nearby help mark the spot.

Idolator’s Noose
- Go inside Rosemary’s Reserve, northeast of Idolator’s Noose.
- Continue until you reach the Propaganda Tower.
- Turn southeast and use the grapple to pull the loose vent from a wall opening.
- The fragment is in the nook, lying on a Ripper’s corpse.
Carcadia Burn
Lopside
Grapple onto the roof of the One Pumper gas station on Lopside’s western edge, south of the Makeshift Chalet safehouse. The fragment is between two tables.
Ruined Sumplands
In the north of Carcadia Burn, go past the Judgement’s Lapse silo to the water outside Hull’s Handbasket. Head down the hill. The fragment is on a pedestal near the water, surrounded by unusual pillars.
Tonnage Peel
- At the Wreck of the Last Great Hope on the western coast, far west of The Lowrise safehouse, enter the tunnel formed by the shipwreck.
- Find the floor hatch beside a red light and pull it open with the grapple.
- Drop into the cave to reach the pedestal holding the fragment.
Terminus Range
Vestal Garrison
The garrison lies east of the Terminus Range entrance from Carcadia Burn and southwest of The Nightcap safehouse.
- Enter through the large door and turn left.
- Go through the next door and up the short stairs to the command room.
- The fragment is on a crate beneath the large monitor.
The Low Leys
Go to the area north of The Pit, north of the Eureka Stane crawler activity and east of the Carcadia Burn entrance. Look for stilt houses beside a curved pink-leaf tree against a cliff. Climb the rocks behind the tree, then grapple to the ledge, where the fragment sits on a pedestal.

The fragment is in a cave in central Cuspid Climb. The guide recommends starting at The Reliquary silo.
- Go out the window of the silo.
- Use the balloon lift to reach the northern outcrop with a lone tree and a nearby cave entrance.
- Climb the rocks inside the cave to reach the pedestal.
Vault locations and rewards
Each completed set opens one Kairos Vault. The reward descriptions below are as PC Gamer’s guide reports them.

The guide lists no boss or hazard note for the Arch of Inceptus or the Arch of Origo.
