The money question is narrower. Official sources describe optional purchases in different terms: PlayStation lists a battle pass, paid cosmetics and a monthly subscription, Steam says monetization is limited to cosmetics, and the lead designer has also mentioned season passes and gacha pulls. This article sets out what each source says, where the descriptions diverge, and what the free offering does and does not establish. It is an assessment of the free-to-play model and the publisher’s scale claims, not a hands-on verdict on how the game plays.
What “free-to-play” means for this game
The free-to-play label is supported by current platform listings, but each source describes the model in its own words. The table below puts the descriptions side by side, with the date and context for each.
| Source | Date | How it describes monetization | Context to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation US store page | Undated live page, accessed October 8, 2026 | Lists an optional battle pass, paid cosmetics and a monthly subscription, and says these do not affect abilities or skills. | Describes the PS5 version and the US storefront. |
| Steam store description | Current description; date not stated | Says gameplay content is free and monetization is limited to cosmetics. Carries a “No pay-to-win” label. | Describes the PC version on Steam. |
| NetEase global launch announcement | 2025, ahead of the November 14, 2025 global launch | Promises no pay-to-win mechanics. | A publisher promise made at launch, not a later audit. |
| TechRadar interview with lead designer Chris Lyu | July 29, 2025, before global launch | Describes cosmetics, season passes and gacha pulls, and states there are no pay-to-win elements. | Developer intent described before release, not the final live economy. |
The differences matter when you try to answer “what do I have to pay for?” A cosmetics-only description (Steam) and a battle pass plus subscription description (PlayStation) are not the same model, and the interview adds gacha pulls. None of the sources says what a battle pass tier or a gacha pull actually awards, so the reward contents are the first thing to check in the in-game store before spending anything.
What the game is
NetEase describes Where Winds Meet as an open-world wuxia action-adventure RPG set in 10th-century China, during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. The player takes the role of a wandering sword master. The setting and genre are the publisher’s own description and are consistent across the launch announcement and the storefront copy.

The scale claims, and who makes them
The game’s publicity leans on large numbers. Each one carries a different level of support, and the table separates them so they are not read as independently measured facts.
| Claim | Who states it | Date | What the figure does and does not mean |
|---|---|---|---|
| Over 150 hours of solo gameplay | PlayStation US store page | Undated live page, accessed October 8, 2026 | A platform description of content volume. It is not an independently measured completion-time estimate. |
| Over 20 regions | PlayStation US store page | Undated live page, accessed October 8, 2026 | A feature claim on the platform page. It does not show regional server or storefront coverage. |
| More than 10,000 unique NPCs | NetEase global launch announcement | 2025 | A launch-period publisher claim. |
| Over 180 cosmetics, including 80+ outfits and 100+ accessories | NetEase global launch announcement | 2025 | Describes launch rewards. It is not a current inventory count. |
| Over 80 million players worldwide | Xbox Wire announcement | June 9, 2026 | A figure reported in the announcement. It is not a live player count and was not independently verified. |
No independent player survey, critic aggregate or measured performance benchmark is available for the game. Any judgment of how large or how deep the world feels in practice has to come from the reader’s own time with it.
Is it multiplayer-only?
No. The sources describe a game that works as a solo experience and also supports shared play, with the emphasis differing by storefront.

- Solo play: PlayStation describes a solo narrative experience. Steam lists single-player as a mode.
- Co-op: PlayStation describes co-op with up to four friends. Steam lists online co-op.
- Competitive play: Steam lists online PvP. The PlayStation description refers to optional multiplayer features without naming PvP.
- Difficulty options: PlayStation lists Story and Challenge modes. The mobile version starts differently, covered below.
If your interest is the single-player story, the sources support that route. If you want competitive PvP, the Steam listing is the only source here that names it, so check the mode’s availability in your version before you plan around it.
What the developer says about monetization
TechRadar’s July 29, 2025 interview is the main attributed statement from the developer on monetization. The quotes below are Chris Lyu’s description of the project, given before launch. They express intent and are not an independent finding about the live game.
On the purpose of the project, Lyu is quoted as saying: “What we hope to create is a really immersive world experience, that was our core goal when we created this project.”
Rank #3
On the absence of pay-to-win, he is quoted as saying: “We don’t have any pay to win elements in the game, so it’s not like you can purchase your power level.”
On what players buy, he is quoted as saying: “All of our monetization relies on making yourself look good. It’s purchasing costumes and mounts or visual effects for different skills and abilities. So it’s all about pleasing yourself.”
These statements line up with the storefront descriptions on cosmetics. They do not settle whether the battle pass, season passes or gacha pulls change progression in practice. A cosmetic-only economy and a cosmetic-plus-pass economy can both be described as “no pay to win” if the passes do not grant power, so the reader needs to check what each paid track actually contains.

- 🌀 Officially Licensed Where Winds Meet Collectible – the Teleporter, in Miniature This isn't fan art on a keycap. It's an official Where Winds Meet keycap — an authorized 3D replica of the game's iconic teleporter, cast in metal with every magical rune and architectural detail intact. For collectors who care about authenticity. For fans who know the difference between licensed and knockoff. The box says it. The keycap proves it. Your keyboard just got a piece of the mystical world itself.
- ⚙️ Premium Metal Construction – 3D Sculpted, Not Flat Printed Cast from high-quality metal with a sculpted 3D profile that rises above the keycap surface — not a flat decal, not a printed image, not a thin layer of epoxy over a sticker. Each teleporter detail is rendered in raised relief you can feel under your fingertip. The weight is real. The cold-metal touch is real. This artisan keycap brings a tactile, architectural presence to your keystrokes that no printed cap can match.
- ⌨️ Cherry MX Compatible – Drops Right into Your Setup Standard Cherry MX stem design fits the vast majority of mechanical keyboards — Cherry, Gateron, Kailh, and most MX-style clones. Ideal for the Escape key, function row, or any 1u slot that needs a personality upgrade. This mechanical keyboard keycap installs in seconds. No adapters. No wobble. No "it almost fits." Just a precision stem that seats securely the first time.
- 🎁 Themed Collector Box – a Where Winds Meet Gift That Lands Before They Even Open It Presented in officially licensed collector packaging featuring game art and branding — the unboxing experience starts the moment they see the box. Surprise for the Where Winds Meet enthusiast who thought they owned every piece of official merch. This collector keycap proves them wrong in the best way.
- 🛠️ Keycap Puller Included – Full Install Kit, No Separate Purchase Every order includes one teleporter-themed metal artisan keycap and a free keycap puller in the box. No hunting for tools. No scratched keycaps from makeshift removal. No waiting for a separate accessory order to arrive. This keycap set arrives complete — pull the old cap, seat the teleporter, and let the mystical world glow from your ESC key. Installation takes 30 seconds. The conversation it starts lasts way longer.
- Controls and defaults: Mobile controls and defaults were adjusted for touch input.
- Starting difficulty: New mobile characters start on Story or Recommended difficulty. Expert unlocks at level 30.

Linking an existing account to mobile
The FAQ gives existing players two routes into mobile, and the order of steps matters.
- Confirm whether your account already has character data on another platform.
- If you have not yet created a mobile character, link your existing account before you create one.
- If you prefer to keep your current account, log in with it instead of creating a new mobile character.
- If both sides already hold character data, the FAQ states those accounts cannot be linked. Decide which progress you want to keep before you start, because the sources do not describe a way to merge them.
PS5 hardware: what the controller adds
PlayStation says the PS5 version uses DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers. A DualSense controller is a practical match for those features, but it is an optional accessory, not a requirement. If you already use a DualSense, you have what the platform describes. PlayStation also includes a PS5 Pro note about resolution, ray tracing and PSSR. That is platform marketing information, not a comparative performance test, so treat it as a description of what the platform advertises.
Quick Recap
Deciding whether the free offer fits you
- If you want a solo story-led open world: The sources support a solo route with no required spending. Check the in-game store and the battle pass contents for your region before your first purchase.
- If you want PvP: Steam is the only storefront here that lists online PvP. Confirm the mode in your version before relying on it.
- If you play on mobile: Plan around the starting difficulty, the adjusted controls and the account-linking order before you create a character.
- If you play on PS5 or PC with a controller: The sources describe the features and the launch dates. Whether the difficulty curve and the paid tracks suit you is a question only play time can answer.
