Download purchased Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 games from Nintendo eShop using the Nintendo Account that owns them. You can also find free demos, limited-time Game Trials for Nintendo Switch Online members, and classic-game library apps with the required membership. Reddit posts may point to ROMs or torrents, but they are not official Nintendo download sources and do not establish that files are authorized or safe.
Download a game you already purchased
- On your Switch or Switch 2, open Nintendo eShop.
- Choose the Nintendo Account associated with the purchase.
- Find the purchased game and download it. Nintendo says digital software is tied to the purchasing account. Nintendo’s virtual game card information explains that a virtual game card can be loaded on up to two consoles associated with an account. Once loaded, any account on that console can play it. On a console that cannot load a virtual game card, the owner’s account can play with an internet connection, but other users on that console cannot.
Buy through Nintendo.com in supported countries
Nintendo’s Nintendo Store FAQ lists digital-game purchases through Nintendo.com for Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and the United States. This is the availability of that service, not a complete list of countries with a regional Nintendo eShop.

To buy there, the Nintendo Account must have accessed eShop on a Switch or Switch 2 at least once. Select the console for delivery; released games begin downloading after purchase. You still need a console, Nintendo Account, internet connection, and access to Nintendo eShop. A download may also require enough free memory and an internet connection while the console is on or in sleep mode.
Legitimate ways to play for free
| Option | What you get | Access conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Free demo | A sample of a game; some demos carry progress over if you later buy the full game. | Download from Nintendo eShop or the Nintendo Store. Nintendo’s family guide describes demos and other digital content. |
| Game Trial | A downloadable full game playable for a limited period. | Requires Nintendo Switch Online membership. It stops being playable when the trial period or membership ends; saved progress is retained, and buying the game later can let you continue. Availability changes. Nintendo’s Game Trials FAQ gives steps for residents of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. |
| Classic-game library | Apps containing classic games. | In Nintendo Australia’s guide, NES and Super NES libraries require Nintendo Switch Online; Nintendo 64 and SEGA Mega Drive libraries require Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Requirements and eShop access can vary by region. Nintendo Australia’s library instructions explain its regional process. |
Find a demo
Open eShop or the Nintendo Store and look for a game’s demo option. A demo is a sample, not the complete paid game; whether progress transfers depends on the title.

Download a Game Trial

Get a classic-game library app
Nintendo Australia’s instructions are: open eShop, choose Nintendo Switch Online, select a library under Content for Members Only, then choose Free Download twice. The guide says periodic internet access may be needed to confirm membership. Check local Nintendo support for your region’s library access and requirements.

Why Reddit ROM and torrent suggestions are not official downloads
Reddit comments recommending ROM sites, torrents, or emulators are user suggestions, not Nintendo instructions. A comment does not establish that a file is authorized, safe, or usable on an original Switch. For games on a Switch or Switch 2, use Nintendo eShop, an eligible Nintendo.com purchase, official demos, available Game Trials, or the classic-game libraries available with the right membership.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What you need for digital downloads
- A Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 and a Nintendo Account.
- Internet access and access to Nintendo eShop.
- Enough free console storage for the download. A compatible microSDXC card can add storage, but it is not a download source and is not required in every case.
Nintendo also identifies eShop cards as a way to add funds without a credit card. Its cited US family page lists $10, $20, $35, and $50 denominations; availability and denominations can change, so check current listings and regional validity before buying. Confirm microSDXC compatibility for your exact console model before choosing a card.
