The most clearly documented optional Bourgeon is in Flying Waters, near the Expedition 48 – Lumerian Streets rest point. It is a rocky-arena fight that can swallow one of your party members. Lightning is its documented weakness, and guides also suggest burn damage and several Lune and Maelle skills. The skin it drops starts a separate quest with a later, grown Bourgeon.
The enemy is spelled “Bourgeon” in the guides cited here and in the game’s destination naming, while some walkthroughs also use “Burgeon.” This article uses “Bourgeon” throughout.

Where to find the Flying Waters Bourgeon
This is the optional encounter that PC Gamer’s guide and the GameFAQs walkthrough both place in Flying Waters. Reach the rest point at Expedition 48 – Lumerian Streets, then follow this route:
- From the rest point, head back through the alley you came in by.
- Turn left into a small ravine.
- Follow the ravine to the rocky arena, where the Bourgeon waits.
Two other Bourgeon locations come up in the guides. According to PC Gamer, another Bourgeon can be found to the right of the Stone Wave Cliffs entrance once Esquie is unlocked, and more appear later in the game. Treat these as separate encounters from the Flying Waters fight, and check your map against the current game build if the positions do not match.

The grown Bourgeon in The Small Bourgeon
A later, grown Bourgeon sits in the area called The Small Bourgeon, south of the Ancient Sanctuary entrance. You reach it as part of the small Nevron’s skin quest, which is covered in the reward section below. It is a different fight from the Flying Waters optional boss, and the two should not be confused when you compare notes with other players.
How to beat it
The guides agree on the core approach: exploit the lightning weakness, add damage over time, and use break abilities to deal with the swallow mechanic. The table below sets out the options each guide names, along with who recommends them.

These are recommendations from guide authors, not measured results. The guides do not compare how much damage each option deals, so pick the approach that fits your current party rather than treating any one as a guaranteed winner.
Using lightning and burn
Lightning is the most direct route because the guides identify Bourgeon as weak to it. Burn adds damage over time, which PC Gamer recommends pairing with Lune. Because the guides are not quantitative, use burn as a supplement to your main damage rather than as a replacement for it.

Handling the swallow mechanic
Bourgeon can swallow a party member, which takes that character out of combat. Breaking the boss is the documented way to recover. Gustave’s Overcharge and other break abilities make it spit the swallowed character back out, and breaking it also resets the eating timer. The guides do not state how long that timer runs, so keep an eye on the swallowed ally’s status and act as soon as a break becomes available.
Maelle’s options
Maelle has the most suggested options in the guides. Degagement is recommended to inflict fire weakness, and Percee is recommended while in Virtuoso stance. The GameFAQs walkthrough adds Perche as a useful move once the boss is marked. These are recommendations rather than tested outcomes, so check how each skill behaves in your own fight.

Survival and evasion
The GameFAQs walkthrough gives general advice to prioritize evasion. Use it to stay alive while you set up lightning or break opportunities, especially during the stretches when the boss is threatening a party member.

- Bring the Bourgeon Skin to the small Nevron in The Small Bourgeon.
- Let the Nevron eat the skin.
- Leave the area and re-enter it. According to PC Gamer, the Nevron will then be grown and will give you Colour of Lumina. The GameFAQs walkthrough describes the same steps and reward.
Defeating the grown Bourgeon yields five Colour of Lumina and one Polished Chroma Catalyst, according to both PC Gamer and the GameFAQs walkthrough. Note that the five Colour of Lumina are game item counts, not statistics from a study.
What the guides do not establish
- The guides do not provide a complete list of the boss’s attack names or a precise timing sequence. Watch for its telegraphs during the fight rather than relying on a memorized pattern.
- The eating-timer length is not stated in the guides cited here.
- The guides do not state the game version they were written for, so patch-specific behavior, platform differences, and current item values may have changed.
