Carbon ore in Dune: Awakening is reported in the southern part of Jabal Eifrit Al-janub, around the drum sand, the southern cliffs and the open dunes, with the hills toward the Hagga Rift border also worth searching. Two 2025 guides, from PC Gamer (published June 10, 2025) and Sietch Watermaster, agree on that region and on the basic requirements. Both describe the location as a guide-based route, not an official resource map, and the game has changed since they were written, so confirm the details in-game before you plan a long trip.
Where to search
The guides converge on one region, so there is no competing carbon ore site to compare against. The practical route is:
- Start in southern Jabal Eifrit Al-janub. Head for the drum sand and the southern cliffs that border the open dunes.
- Work the hills toward the Hagga Rift border. PC Gamer places carbon nodes in these hills as well as along the southern cliffs.
- Scan rock faces as you move. Look for white chunks protruding from the rock. This is the visual cue both guides describe.
- Use a fast-travel point to reduce the walk. PC Gamer names The Anvil Tradepost as the convenient anchor once you have visited it.
Where The Anvil Tradepost sits
The two statements about Anvil do not match cleanly. PC Gamer’s location summary places the carbon area just north of The Anvil Tradepost, while its fuller description treats Anvil as lying north of the region. Read the two together to mean the Anvil is the nearest fast-travel point and that you will be travelling south from it. Check the relative position on your in-game map before you rely on it.
Neither guide gives coordinates, a node count, or guaranteed spawn points. Treat the southern cliffs and hills as the places to search rather than as confirmed nodes.

What you need before you go
Both guides say carbon ore requires at least a MK.2 Cutteray. A lower-tier tool will not be enough according to these guides, so do not plan the trip around an earlier version of the tool.
- Tool: MK.2 Cutteray, the minimum reported by both guides.
- Armor: PC Gamer says the area contains enemy outposts and recommends proper armor rather than relying on a Stillsuit alone.
- Time: PC Gamer says carbon is less plentiful than copper or iron, so plan for a more thorough search than you would need for those materials.
These are recommendations from the guides, not results from testing for this article.

What carbon ore is used for
Carbon ore is an input for steel. Both guides describe the same refining ratio:
- Ore refiner (PC Gamer): four carbon ore and one iron ingot produce one steel ingot.
- Small Ore Refinery (Sietch Watermaster): the same four-to-one carbon ratio, with one iron ingot. Sietch Watermaster notes that more advanced refineries may be more efficient, but does not give figures for them.
This means you need to bring or refine iron as well as collect carbon. Steel ingots are needed for higher-quality schematics and equipment, including MK.3 tools, according to both guides.

How current this information is
Both guides are from 2025. The official Dune: Awakening game-updates listing includes a May 2026 entry that introduces new locations. The official page did not open during checking, so it is not confirmed whether that update changes anything about carbon ore nodes. Before you travel, check the update notes for the current version and confirm the region, tool requirement and refining ratio in-game. If a node is missing from the hills or cliffs, the update history is the first place to check.
Use the 2025 guides as a starting point for where to look and what to bring, not as a guarantee for the current version.
