Essence of Eleum in Terraria’s Calamity Mod drops from cold-themed enemies, Fleshy and Necromantic Geodes, Cryogen, Ice Golems, and Boreal Crates. The official Calamity Mod Wiki page for Essence of Eleum lists these sources with drop chances and quantities, and those figures differ by source and by difficulty mode. The sections below break them down so you can pick the route that fits your progression.
Where Essence of Eleum drops
The wiki groups its sources into three tiers: occasional drops from a few ice enemies, guaranteed drops from most cold-themed enemies and geodes, and a 50% chance from Boreal Crates. Quantities are shown as a normal-mode range and, where listed, an Expert Mode range.
Occasional drops (20%)
Three enemies have a 20% chance to drop a single Essence of Eleum:
- Mister Stabby
- Snow Balla
- Snowman Gangsta
Because the drop chance is only 20%, these enemies are a slow option if you need several Essence. The wiki does not list a separate Expert Mode quantity for them.

Choosing the right route

- WIDE COMPARABILITY: Use your GC20 gamepad with all Windows 10/8.1/7 Computers / Laptops, Android Tablets / Phones and PlayStation 4.
- HIGH ACCURACY: With advanced analog sticks, the Force GC series controllers provide flawless smooth movement. Two different D-pad covers with magnetic design allows you to switch for your preferred game type.
- DUAL VIBRATION MOTORS: Equipped with dual vibration motors, the GC20 controller is able to use haptic feedback to enhance the gaming experience and provide an additional dimension of sensory input.
- Progression point. Confirm which of these sources you can reach in your world. Cryogen, Ice Golems, and the geodes sit at different stages of play, so the wiki’s boss and enemy pages should be checked against your current progress.
- Drop chance. A 100% source guarantees the drop each time. A 20% or 50% source needs more kills or openings to produce the same result.
- Quantity per drop. Boss and geode sources give several Essence per kill or opening, while the 20% enemies give one.
- Repeatability. Note whether the source is a repeatable enemy, a geode, or a boss-tied reward.
The page does not measure real-world farming speed, so it cannot tell you which route is quickest for an actual playthrough. Work out the expected yield from the numbers above and your own kill or opening rate.
What Essence of Eleum is used for
The wiki lists Essence of Eleum as an ingredient in 18 recipes. Examples include Elumplate, Cryo Key, Frigidflash Bolt, Kelvin Catalyst, and Chronomancer’s Scythe. It also appears in later equipment and utility items. Because it has several uses, decide which recipe you want first and gather only what that recipe needs.

The item is classed as a Hardmode material on its wiki page. The page’s listed sources do not show a route that works before Hardmode, so do not assume one exists without checking the current wiki entries for your version.
The name refers to Frozen Eleum Loyce, an ice-themed location in the Dark Souls series. This is background only and does not affect where the item drops.

Version and accuracy notes
The wiki page was accessed on 2026-10-08 and does not give a publication date or a single mod version for its whole table. Its history section states that the history is a work in progress and may not cover every change in the current version. Check your installed Calamity Mod version against the wiki before relying on exact drop rates or quantities.
The item’s in-game tooltip reads “The essence of cold creatures.” This is item text, not a quotation from a person or organisation.
Because this is a gameplay question, no physical product, guide, or accessory is needed to find the material.
Some drop quantities increase in Expert Mode, so compare the difficulty you are playing before choosing a source.
