If by “cute dog minion” you mean Chewy, the minion is listed as obtainable from Woodland Exploration XXVIII or Pilgrim’s Traverse silver sacks. Chewy is tradeable, so you can also check the Market Board. It predates Dawntrail: the item database lists it as a patch 6.1 minion, not as a Dawntrail-specific unlock.
How to get Chewy
FFXIV Collect lists two acquisition routes for Chewy: Woodland Exploration XXVIII and Pilgrim’s Traverse silver sacks. These are database-listed sources, not an official Square Enix confirmation.
- Woodland Exploration XXVIII: Listed as a source for Chewy through this exploration venture.
- Pilgrim’s Traverse silver sacks: Also listed as a source. The database entry does not provide further drop-rate or availability details.
- Market Board: FFXIV Collect marks Chewy as tradeable, so check your world’s Market Board if you would rather buy it. Prices depend on the market and have not been verified here.
Is Chewy the cute dog minion from the title?
“Cute dog minion” is not a unique item name. Chewy is a strong match: FFXIV Collect describes it as a small breed of dog, and its item description calls it an adorable critter. The journal text says it is native to the New World and was brought to Eorzea by Lominsan sailors.
The same catalog also includes other dog or dog-like minions, including Faepup, Mameshiba, Gestahl, Shiromaru, and Komainu. If you have a particular appearance in mind, compare the minion’s name and description before pursuing a route.

What Chewy’s Dawntrail connection is
Chewy is listed as a patch 6.1 minion, so it was available before Dawntrail. The listed sources above are not Dawntrail-specific unlocks. A 2022 guide discussed Chewy when its acquisition method was still unknown; for current route information, the newer database listing is more useful.
Chewy’s description
FFXIV Collect’s item description reads: “Summon your Chewy minion. Take care not to drown in its literal puppy dog eyes.” Its attributed in-game tooltip, credited to Hien, reads: “From a hound at his throat to a puppy at his heel…”
