The item many players call the “Ring of Oath” is called the Dark Moon Ring in Elden Ring. You get it from a locked chest beside Rennala in the Raya Lucaria Grand Library, and you can only open that chest after Ranni gives you the Discarded Palace Key following the Baleful Shadow encounter.
What the “Ring of Oath” is called in the game
“Ring of Oath” is a player-side nickname. The game’s item is the Dark Moon Ring, and walkthroughs from GameSpot (dated June 26, 2024) and Push Square (dated August 26, 2026) both use that name. If you search your inventory or an item list for “Ring of Oath,” you will not find a separate item, so look for the Dark Moon Ring.

How to open the Grand Library chest
The ring sits in a chest that stays locked until you have the key from Ranni. Work through these steps in order.
- Advance Ranni’s quest to the Baleful Shadow. The route runs through Nokron and then the later Ainsel River and Nokstella section. The Baleful Shadow encounter takes place in a cave reached near Nokstella Waterfall Basin, according to both walkthroughs.
- Defeat the Baleful Shadow. Ranni then gives you the Discarded Palace Key.
- Fast travel to the Raya Lucaria Grand Library. This is the room where the Rennala fight takes place. The locked chest is beside the Site of Grace, to the left, as GameSpot describes it.
- Open the chest with the Discarded Palace Key. Inside is the Dark Moon Ring.
Using the ring on Ranni
The ring is not a standalone reward. It is the item the route needs to get past the next seal and to finish the Ranni section described in these walkthroughs. The sequence is:

- Return to the Lake of Rot and make your way through the Grand Cloister.
- Use the coffin on the route to reach Astel, Naturalborn of the Void, and defeat him.
- Open the seal beyond the arena with the Dark Moon Ring. Continue through the passage and take the lift up to the Moonlight Altar.
- Descend into the cavern at the Cathedral of Manus Celes and use the Dark Moon Ring on Ranni.
If the seal after Astel will not open, you most likely have not collected the ring yet. Go back to the Grand Library and open Rennala’s chest.
Managing the Lake of Rot crossing
The Lake of Rot exposes you to Scarlet Rot. GameSpot’s walkthrough suggests two in-game consumables for handling the crossing: Preserving Boluses and Crimson Flasks. Both are items you find or use inside Elden Ring; neither is a separate purchase.

Is the Dark Moon Ring required to finish Ranni’s quest?
Summaries of Ranni’s questline disagree on this point. Some quick guides say the ring is not needed to complete the questline. The full walkthroughs above treat it as required for the route past the seal beyond Astel and for using it on Ranni at Manus Celes. If you are following that route, you need the ring. Whether a particular ending or optional branch depends on it is not something these sources spell out, so treat “complete” in that sense as unconfirmed.

Fixing common problems
- The chest is still locked. You need the Discarded Palace Key from Ranni, which he gives after the Baleful Shadow encounter. Until you have it, the chest will not open.
- The seal after Astel stays closed. You likely have not collected the Dark Moon Ring. Return to the Grand Library, open Rennala’s chest, and then come back.
- You cannot find an item called “Ring of Oath.” Look for the Dark Moon Ring instead.
Ranni’s questline is one of several Elden Ring quest lines, and the Dark Moon Ring is only one step in it. Keep your save before the Astel fight so you can return to the Grand Library if you miss the chest.
