If you enter KRIS as the vessel name at the start of Deltarune, the game responds with a special line, rejects that vessel, and moves you into Kris’s room, where Toriel calls out “KRIS!” The name does not make you the protagonist. Kris is already the story’s protagonist, and the opening sequence is built around that reveal.
What happens, step by step
The opening asks for two separate inputs: a vessel name and a creator name. The game reacts to each one differently, so it helps to know which field you are typing into.
- During the opening sequence, you are prompted to supply a vessel name and a creator name.
- If the vessel name you enter is KRIS, the voice responds with the line “KRIS.” AN INTERESTING COINCIDENCE.
- The game then rejects the vessel. The rejection line is “No one can choose who they are in this world.”
- The scene transitions to Kris’s room, where Toriel calls “KRIS!”
Vessel name versus creator name
The two fields produce different results, and the community-maintained Deltarune Wiki records both. Only the vessel-name response is described in detail.
| Field you type KRIS into | Game response | Outcome recorded |
|---|---|---|
| Vessel name | “KRIS.” AN INTERESTING COINCIDENCE. | Vessel rejected; scene moves to Kris’s room |
| Creator name | A special response is recorded, but its exact wording is not stated in the source reviewed | Not stated |
What the name does and does not change
Entering KRIS as the vessel name does not rename the protagonist. The sequence reinforces the reveal that the protagonist is already Kris rather than letting the player choose a different identity.

The sources reviewed establish only the opening response and the transition to Kris’s room. They do not establish whether the choice affects saves, endings, or later gameplay, so this article does not claim that it does.
Quoted in-game lines
These lines come from the game as transcribed on the Deltarune Wiki. They are attributed to the game itself, not to a named speaker:
- “KRIS.” AN INTERESTING COINCIDENCE.
- “No one can choose who they are in this world.”
- “KRIS!”
How reliable this information is
- The naming sequence is documented on The Deltarune Wiki, a community-maintained reference. Its revision date was not established, and the wording is not checked against an official transcript.
- The official DELTARUNE help page, updated June 24, 2026, covers platforms and purchasing. It does not describe the opening naming sequence.
Treat the sequence described above as well-documented secondary-source information rather than an officially confirmed transcript.
If you want to see the reaction for yourself, start a new save, enter KRIS in the vessel-name field, and watch for the line above before the scene moves to Kris’s room.
