The Totem of Defiance is in Emerald Stair. Its base, The Schemer’s Offering, sits atop the Shrine to Skaen in Delemgan Glade, on the region’s western side. Find the six fragments scattered around Emerald Stair, then assemble and activate the totem at camp. You can collect the pieces in any order.
Where to find the base
Go to Delemgan Glade in western Emerald Stair and climb the platforms and ruins of the Shrine to Skaen. The Schemer’s Offering—the totem’s base—is at the top. PC Gamer places the glade northwest of Emerald Stair, while GameSpot describes the shrine as being in the region’s western part; both identify the Shrine to Skaen as the base’s location (PC Gamer; GameSpot).
All six Totem of Defiance fragments
Collect these six pieces anywhere in Emerald Stair. Some require climbing or cave navigation; the Effigy Necklace is associated with progress in the Ancient Soil main quest.
| Fragment | Location | How to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Obsidian Prayer Beads | Delemgan Glade | In the circular courtyard, climb the large tree trunk on the west side, then follow the rocky path to an overlooking ledge. |
| Idol of Violent Rebellion | Ranger Headquarters, east of Fior mes Iverno | Climb the tower from its south side, using crates and ladders to reach the top. |
| Effigy Necklace | Naku Tedek | Look in the secret tunnels opened during the Ancient Soil quest. Use an electrical effect to open a door, then freeze the water to make a platform and reach the ledge. |
| Idol of Secret Hatred | Ancient Grotto, west of Naku Tedek Grounds | Take the lower cave route and crouch through the narrow opening near a skeleton. |
| Sacrificial Dagger | Abandoned Farms, Rolling Crags | Look for the dagger lodged in a note on the back of a building. |
| Idol of Covert Plots | Grim Wetlands, northwestern Emerald Stair | Enter the locked church or building. Guides describe different ways in: a side entrance opened with a switch in a statue lamp, or access from the roof. Check for the available route at the location. |
How to assemble and activate the totem
- Collect The Schemer’s Offering and all six fragments. The fragments can be gathered in any order.
- Return to camp and assemble the Totem of Defiance.
- Activate the assembled totem at camp to complete the set. PC Gamer reports that completion also triggers a brief, memory-like sequence about Skaen.
What the fragments are reported to do
PC Gamer lists the following effects for the individual pieces. These are guide-reported item effects; their status against current official patch notes has not been independently confirmed.

Plan your route around quest progress and traversal
Because the pieces are order-independent, you can pick them up as you explore rather than follow one mandatory route. Prioritize the Effigy Necklace when you are working through Ancient Soil, since its secret tunnels open during that quest. The Shrine to Skaen and Ranger Headquarters involve climbing; the Ancient Grotto requires navigating a lower cave route. The remaining fragments are located in the named areas in the checklist above.
