It is tied to The Innkeeper’s Husband quest. Take it to the locked Western Bridge door in Mariner’s Keep to open the way forward.
How to get the Western Bridge Key

Check with Caroline in Sacrament to see whether The Innkeeper’s Husband is available. The quest’s timing appears to have changed: a reply on the No Rest for the Wicked official forum dated 12 July 2025 says it becomes accessible after completing Servant of God, the first part of Nameless Pass, and Of Rats and Raiders in The Black Trench. Older guides place it earlier, after reaching Sacrament, so use those two quests as the progression check if Caroline has not offered it.

Return to the starting area and head west through The Shallows toward the ruined tower. Work around the tower’s base and approach from the back; a direct climb up the front will not get you there. Climb to the top and look for Gordon. The key is on the nearby body.

Go back to Mariner’s Keep and climb the tall tower on its western edge. Use the key on the locked Western Bridge door.

Explore through the opened area and open the gate from the inside. The route back toward Gordon lets you continue the rescue quest. Expect enemies, including a heavy Risen; guides also note chests and dig sites accessible with a shovel.
If the key or Gordon is missing
First check your quest progression rather than searching the tower repeatedly. The July 2025 official-forum reply reports that The Innkeeper’s Husband was moved later, behind Servant of God and Of Rats and Raiders. The exact requirement for the current game build is not established by an official patch note in the available sources, so a later update may have changed the timing again.
