In Buried City, the trail starts at the Abandoned Highway Camp in the southwest, and it runs east along the raised highway, then northeast to the grave in the Buried Properties area. Activating the step requires investigating a backpack near the buses at the camp. Walkthroughs published in late 2025 and early 2026 describe this route, but the sources do not confirm whether later game updates changed it, so if the flags you see differ from what is described here, trust what is in front of you and use the quest log as your guide.
How to start the red-marker trail
The trail does not begin until the quest step is active. Guides agree that the trigger is at the camp itself, not at the first flag, so you need to complete this part before any markers will lead anywhere.
- Reach the Abandoned Highway Camp. It sits on the raised highway in the southwest part of Buried City, near a row of buses. Guides describe reaching it from nearby rooftops or from the highway approach.
- Investigate the backpack by the buses. This interaction triggers the survivor-search follow-up and activates the “Follow the red markers” objective.
- Find the first red marker. It is near the camp. Look for a small red cloth strip tied to a stake, placed around road debris, vehicles, or a broken section of road.
Following the flags to the grave
Once the objective is active, the route is a chain of flags. Each one is visible from the previous one, so you move from marker to marker rather than navigating by map.
- Head east along the elevated road. Keep moving along the highway, passing the flags as they appear beside the wreckage.
- Cross the broken highway. The road is damaged in places. Follow the flags through the gaps rather than trying to shortcut across the debris.
- Drop off the highway at the major collapse. Near the largest break, the road slopes down toward Piazza Arbusto. The markers lead off the road and across the sand here.
- Continue northeast toward Buried Properties. The trail continues through this area until it ends at the grave, which is the object you need to inspect to complete the step.
When the red cloth is hard to see
The red cloth can blend into rusted wreckage and dust, which is the main reason players lose the trail. The walkthrough guidance on this point is practical rather than technical, and it works well in practice:

- Scan both sides of the road and the debris around you before moving on, rather than looking only straight ahead.
- Stop and check the area if no next marker appears within your field of view.
- If you lose the trail, return to the last flag you saw and search the nearby ground and wreckage before continuing.
Following the markers or going straight to the grave
After the objective activates, you can skip the flags entirely if you already know where the grave is. Walkthroughs describe this shortcut as a valid option, not a bug or workaround. The two approaches serve different goals, as the table shows.

Players who want the intended visual route should follow the flags. Players who already know the location and care mainly about speed can go straight to the grave.
