The simplest early-game source is Jurg Thomel, the trader in Troskowitz. Buy a spade from him, or, if you would rather not pay, take the one at the cemetery east of town, which counts as theft. Both routes are covered below, along with the prologue spade, which you have to give back, and the difference between a spade and a shovel in the game’s item wording.
Buying a spade from Jurg Thomel in Troskowitz
Jurg Thomel is the reliable purchase point for a spade early in the game. Guides place his shop in the northern part of Troskowitz. Gamepressure describes it as the north of the village, while The Outerhaven puts it in the northwest section. Both descriptions point to the same stretch of town, so head to the northern side and look for his stall or store.

- Enter Troskowitz and walk to the northern part of the village.
- Find Jurg Thomel’s shop and open the trade window.
- Check the spade in his stock. Gamepressure notes that spades also turn up among other merchants and blacksmiths, so a second vendor is worth checking if Thomel’s stock is empty.
- Buy the spade with Groschen. The price is covered in the section below.
Taking the cemetery spade instead
Guides describe a spade at the cemetery east of Troskowitz that you can take without paying. Taking it is treated as theft, and if a local sees you or reports you, you may face trouble with the residents of the village. If you want to avoid the crime, buy the spade from Thomel. If you are already committed to this route, take it when no one is nearby.
The prologue spade is temporary
The first spade you see during the prologue is borrowed for that sequence. You have to return it, so it does not become your permanent tool. Do not count on it for later digging tasks; you will need to obtain your own spade from one of the sources in this guide.

Spade versus shovel
The game separates these two tools by function. The in-game item description reads: “Spades are for digging graves, shovels are for tossing sand.” If a quest or task involves digging graves, look for a spade. A shovel is for moving sand, so a search for “where to buy a shovel” may send you to the wrong item.
Price and weight
Price figures vary between guides. Gamepressure reports a price of about 7 Groschen for the spade and says the item is quite heavy, which is why it suggests keeping it on a mount once you have it. Another guide gives a six-Groschen price for the Troskowitz trader. The Outerhaven reports seven Groschen and a weight of 7 kg. Treat these as guide-reported figures rather than fixed values. Prices can differ with the game version, your trading standing, or the merchant’s current stock, so check the price shown in Thomel’s trade window before you buy.

| Source | Location | Cost | Crime risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jurg Thomel (trader) | Northern Troskowitz | About 6 to 7 Groschen, per guide reports | None |
| Cemetery east of Troskowitz | East of the village | Free | Theft; may be reported by residents |
| Prologue spade | Prologue sequence | Borrowed; must be returned | None if returned |
| Other mapped sites (Gamer Guides) | Trosky and Kuttenberg | Varies | Some entries involve theft or trespassing |
For most players, the simplest choice is to buy from Thomel. The cemetery spade saves a few Groschen but carries a theft risk, and the other mapped locations are useful only if you are already in those areas.
