You buy the Stopwatch from the Traveling Merchant for 5 Gold. He is not always in town, and his stock changes, so the Stopwatch only appears when he visits and happens to carry it.

How to buy the Stopwatch

  1. Wait for the Traveling Merchant to appear in your town. He arrives at random and stays for one in-game day.
  2. Open his shop and check the listing. The Official Terraria Wiki’s item page states that the Stopwatch “can be purchased from the Traveling Merchant for 5 Gold.”
  3. Have at least 5 Gold available. Any currency combination that totals 5 Gold works.
  4. If the Stopwatch is not listed, leave it for now. His inventory varies between visits, and the wiki does not give a reliable chance of any single item appearing, so there is no guaranteed waiting time.

The sources document only this one direct acquisition route. The Stopwatch is not crafted from other materials, and no enemy drop is recorded for it.

What the Stopwatch does

The Stopwatch is an informational accessory. Its only effect is to display your current movement speed. Informational accessories do not occupy an accessory slot, so you do not need to equip it. Keeping it in your main inventory is enough, and according to the item page it still works when stored in a Void Bag.

Using it in Goblin Tech

The Stopwatch is also an ingredient in Goblin Tech, which sits within the Shellphone crafting progression. To make Goblin Tech:

#1 Best Overall
Two Point Hospital - Nintendo Switch
  • Build up a hospital from nothing to a masterpiece as you design the most beautiful – or functional – healthcare operation in the whole of Two Point County.
  • Optimise your hospital design to increase patient (and cash) flow, arranging corridors, rooms and waiting areas to your exact specifications.
  • Expand your hospital to multiple buildings as you look to get as many patients through the door as possible.
  • Place decorative and functional items around your hospital to improve its prestige, lower patient boredom, increase happiness and keep those end of year awards flowing in.
  • Features two great expansions, 21 hospitals and 119 very unusual illnesses!
  • Combine the Stopwatch with a Metal Detector and a DPS Meter.
  • Craft at a Tinkerer’s Workshop.

If you are not pursuing the Shellphone line, the Stopwatch is useful only as a movement-speed display, and buying it for that purpose is a matter of preference.

Platform scope

The official Stopwatch page describes this information as applying to desktop, console, and mobile versions. The sources do not establish whether older releases or community mods behave the same way, so check those separately if you play on them.
