The Water emote (/water) is unlocked by buying its reward item from Jonathas in Old Gridania with Achievement Certificates. The community guide sources list the item as Ballroom Etiquette – Flowerbed Maintenance and the price as 2 Achievement Certificates. Square Enix’s official guidance confirms Jonathas and the certificate exchange, but I could not confirm the emote item name or price on an official page, so treat those two details as community-sourced.

Confirm you are looking for /water

Several Final Fantasy XIV emotes have similar names, and guides sometimes mix them up. Check the command before you follow an unlock route.

Command What it does Source for the description
/water Sprinkles water over the ground. This is the emote covered in this guide. Community-maintained FFXIV guide (FFXIV Console Games Wiki)
/waterfloat Performs a back float in water. Lodestone Eorzea Database entry for /waterfloat
/splash Splashes playfully when in water. Supports a motion subcommand. Lodestone Eorzea Database entry for /splash

If the animation you want is a back float, you are looking for /waterfloat, which is a different emote with its own acquisition path. The route below applies only to /water.

How to get the Water emote

  1. Check your Achievement Certificates. Open the Achievements window and confirm how many Achievement Certificates you hold. Square Enix’s “Changes to Veteran Rewards” announcement states that the count is visible there.
  2. Travel to Jonathas in Old Gridania. He is at X:10.6 Y:6.3 in Old Gridania. Square Enix’s announcement names this location for procuring certificates.
  3. Exchange achievement points for certificates if you need more. The official announcement describes using achievement points to purchase certificates from Jonathas. It was written for Patch 4.1, so confirm the current exchange rate in your client before you spend points.
  4. Buy the Water emote’s reward item from Jonathas. The community guide lists the item as Ballroom Etiquette – Flowerbed Maintenance and the cost as 2 Achievement Certificates. Confirm the item name and price on Jonathas’s list before buying, because the guide does not give a date for these details.
  5. Use the emote. Once you have learned it, enter /water in the chat box. The listed description is “Sprinkle water over the ground.”

What is verified and what is community-sourced

  • Verified by Square Enix: Jonathas in Old Gridania handles Achievement Certificate procurement and exchange, at X:10.6 Y:6.3.
  • Community-sourced: The Water emote’s unlock item, Ballroom Etiquette – Flowerbed Maintenance, and its price of 2 Achievement Certificates. These come from the FFXIV Console Games Wiki, which gives no publication year.
  • Not established: Whether the emote’s unlock item and price have changed in a later patch. Check Jonathas’s list in game if the price looks different.

If the route does not match your game

  • Jonathas is not where the guide says. Use the coordinates X:10.6 Y:6.3 with the in-game map and aetheryte in Old Gridania. The coordinates are from Square Enix’s announcement and do not confirm a later location change.
  • You have certificates but no Water item. The item may be listed under a different name. Compare the description on the item against the emote description above, since the community sources identify it by name only.
  • You want a different water animation. Use the table above to find /waterfloat or /splash and follow its own unlock route.
