Spend Murmuring Obols at the Purveyor of Curiosities. The vendor sells two things: randomized gear for a slot you choose, and Whispering Keys that open Silent Chests you find in the open world. Gear is the purchase to make when one equipment slot is holding back your build. Keys only make sense if you regularly find Silent Chests. Vendor prices changed with the June 2026 patch, so older price lists should not be used as current.
Where the Purveyor of Curiosities is
Purveyors of Curiosities appear in major towns and several other settlements. The March 11, 2026 Wowhead guide lists these locations:

Locations can change with game updates, so check your map if a town has been reworked since that guide was published.
Option one: randomized gear by slot
The Purveyor sells randomized gear in the slot you pick. The exact item and its quality are not known until you complete the purchase. Treat each purchase as a chance at an upgrade, not a guaranteed one.

Pick the slot that limits your build
Compare your equipped gear against what your build depends on. The slot where your character is weakest gives the purchase the most value, because a better roll there changes your performance more than a marginal gain in a strong slot would.
Expect variance inside the slot
Slot targeting narrows the category of item you receive, but it does not fix a specific item or quality. The June 16, 2026 patch note says the chance of quality per item improved. It does not give a numeric figure for that change, so plan around the improvement as a direction, not as known odds.

Option two: Whispering Keys and Silent Chests
A Whispering Key opens a Silent Chest. It is a consumable for opening a chest, not an alternative gear slot. The March 2026 guides do not state what a Silent Chest contains, so do not buy keys expecting a specific reward. Check the current key price in the vendor window, since it is listed in the price section below.

Prices: historical figures and the June 2026 increase
The Wowhead guide dated March 11, 2026 lists the following prices. They are historical. The Diablo IV official forum patch note posted June 16, 2026 says:

The same note does not list the new slot prices, and no current price was stated in the material used for this article. Confirm current costs in the vendor window before you spend.

Obol cap: 50,000 as of June 16, 2026
The June 16, 2026 official forum patch note says “Obol Cap set to 50,000.” Older guides cite a cap of 2,580. That figure predates the June change and should not be used.
If you are close to the cap, spend before you collect more. Otherwise you may be blocked from receiving Obols from sources you already have access to.

Where Obols come from
The March 2026 guides list these sources as examples. They are not a complete or guaranteed list:
- World events and Gathering Legions
- Dungeon and cellar events
- Side-quest Murmuring Caches
- The Pit of Artificers
- Curious Murl
- Cursed dungeon chests and shrines, Nightmare Dungeon chests, and Helltide sources, as named in the Purveyor guide
Because these guides predate later patches, confirm the current Obol reward of any activity in the game before you plan around it.
Season of Reckoning: Urn of Curiosities
Blizzard’s Season of Reckoning overview describes the Urn of Curiosities this way: “Boost the chance of receiving a second item when purchasing from the Purveyor of Curiosities.” This is a seasonal detail. Check that the Urn is active for your current season and character before you count on a second item.
A decision order for spending
- Identify the equipment slot that most limits your build.
- Check the current price for that slot in the Purveyor’s vendor window, not in older guides.
- If the slot is a real gap, spend on it, accepting that the item and quality are random.
- Buy Whispering Keys only if you regularly find Silent Chests and want to open them.
- Before a large spend, confirm whether the Urn of Curiosities is active on your character.
Do not rely on the older price or cap figures in any March 2026 guide. The June 16, 2026 patch note supersedes them.
