You do not need to play Final Fantasy in numerical order. Choose an entry by the kind of game you want, then check whether it belongs to a connected subseries. For an officially standalone, action-led mainline game, start with FINAL FANTASY XVI. If you want Midgar and a character-focused story, FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE welcomes newcomers—but it begins a connected trilogy, not a finished saga. If you specifically want an online role-playing game, consider FINAL FANTASY XIV Online.
The word “standalone” needs a little care here: a game can offer a complete experience on its own while also being part of a larger continuing project. That distinction matters most if you choose the FINAL FANTASY VII remake route.

Do you have to play Final Fantasy in order?
No. The numbered entries are not a universal story sequence that newcomers must follow from I onward. Square Enix’s official series index lists numbered titles from I through XVI alongside their different premises; it is a useful way to browse, not a required play order. Start with the entry that fits your preferred setting and style, rather than treating the Roman numerals as chapters in one continuous plot. Square Enix’s series index can help you compare the premises.

That does not mean every game with a familiar name is unrelated to every other one. Some titles belong to named subseries, sequels, or remake projects with connected stories. A number alone is not enough to tell you whether you can jump in: check the particular game’s continuity before choosing it. The clearest newcomer routes supported by the publisher’s descriptions are FINAL FANTASY XVI for a standalone mainline entry, the connected FINAL FANTASY VII remake project for a Midgar-focused story, and FINAL FANTASY XIV Online for an MMORPG.

So if your question is “Where should I start with Final Fantasy?”, there is no single answer that fits everyone. “Do I want an action-led single-player game, a connected character story, or an online role-playing game?” is a more useful first question than “Which Roman numeral comes first?” Once a candidate appeals to you, check its continuity and whether the edition is available for your platform.
Which starting point fits you?
| If you want… | Start with… | What to know first |
|---|---|---|
| An action-led mainline game you can approach on its own | FINAL FANTASY XVI | Square Enix describes it as a standalone entry, with real-time action combat and RPG features. Its approach is not a template for every game in the series. |
| Midgar, a cinematic character story, and a continuing saga | FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE | Square Enix calls it an ideal entry point for newcomers. It begins a connected three-game remake project, so expect the story to continue beyond this game. |
| A persistent online role-playing game | FINAL FANTASY XIV Online | It is an MMORPG, a different commitment and format from a self-contained single-player entry. |
| A different setting or premise | Browse the official series index | Use the premise to find a candidate, then confirm whether it belongs to a sequel or subseries before you start. |
These are routes by preference, not a ranking of which game is best. The official material supports the distinctions in format and continuity above, but it does not establish a comprehensive ranking of every entry’s combat systems or suitability for every player.
Use five practical comparison points when deciding: combat approach, setting and premise, tone, solo versus online format, and whether the story is self-contained or connected to other games. Then add platform and edition availability. This avoids a common mismatch: selecting a game because it is famous or numbered, then discovering that its format or ongoing story commitment is not what you wanted. Square Enix’s series index can help with the premise question, while the publisher’s descriptions identify the key differences among these three routes.

Start with Final Fantasy XVI for a standalone, action-led game
If you want a numbered mainline entry that does not require another Final Fantasy story first, FINAL FANTASY XVI is the clearest recommendation here. Square Enix described it as “the latest standalone entry” in its June 22, 2023 launch announcement. The wording reflects the publisher’s description at that time; it is not a claim that the game will remain the latest entry indefinitely. Square Enix’s launch announcement also identifies it as an action RPG with real-time combat and RPG features.
What its combat description means for your choice
Choose XVI if real-time, action-oriented combat sounds appealing. It is not the recommendation for someone who wants every game in the franchise to play the same way: the series has varied premises and formats, and the publisher’s description of XVI should not be generalized to the entire catalogue.
Square Enix also highlighted Timely Accessories as a way to tailor difficulty. That gives players an option to adjust aspects of the experience, but it does not turn the game into a representative sample of every combat style in Final Fantasy. If you are deciding between XVI and another entry, compare the kind of combat you want rather than assuming the series has one fixed system.
That makes XVI a focused recommendation, not a claim that action combat is the “correct” way to experience the franchise. If action-led play is not a draw, use the other criteria instead: whether you prefer a world and characters you can follow across connected games, or an online role-playing format. No one needs to play XVI first to make sense of another unrelated entry.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen this route is not the right fit
- If your main interest is Midgar and its characters, choose the FINAL FANTASY VII remake route instead.
- If you want an online world and MMORPG play, look at FINAL FANTASY XIV Online.
- If you are choosing primarily by platform, verify current availability for your system before buying; platform lineups can change.
Start with Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade if you want Midgar
FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE is a reasonable entry for someone new to the franchise who is drawn to Midgar and a cinematic character story. Square Enix explicitly presents FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE as an ideal entry point for newcomers. Its 2020 announcement described FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE as a standalone gaming experience set in Midgar. The publisher’s Midgar announcement describes that first game; a later announcement clarifies the larger project’s continuity.

Standalone experience does not mean standalone saga
There is no contradiction between calling the first game a standalone gaming experience and saying that the remake project is connected. The first phrase describes the experience offered by that game; it does not mean the larger story ends there. In September 2026, Square Enix identified the remake project as a trilogy and described FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION as its third and final entry. The publisher’s announcement is the clearest guide to the project’s status and planned conclusion: Square Enix’s September 3, 2026 announcement.
This is the key distinction to weigh before starting. If you are comfortable beginning a story whose continuation is in other games, the newcomer recommendation makes sense: Square Enix positions INTERGRADE as an entry point, and the first game’s setting and experience stand on their own in the sense described by the publisher. If your priority is a story project that is already complete, do not mistake “standalone gaming experience” for “the entire remake story is finished.” The trilogy announcement describes the broader arc.
| Part of the remake project | What a newcomer should expect |
|---|---|
| FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE | The newcomer-oriented starting point in the remake project, focused on Midgar. |
| FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH | The second game in the project; it continues the connected story. |
| FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION | Announced as the third and final entry, planned for April 8, 2027. It had not been released as of October 13, 2026. |
Choose this route if you are happy to follow a continuing story across multiple games. If what you want is a complete, officially standalone mainline entry rather than the start of a larger project, XVI is the cleaner fit.
Check the edition and platform before purchasing
In its September 3, 2026 announcement, Square Enix said the first two remake games were available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and described a Trilogy Edition that gives access to those first two games. The same announcement planned the final entry for April 8, 2027. Availability, included content, physical or digital format, and retailer stock can vary, so check the current listing for your platform and the exact edition you intend to buy. Do not assume a bundle gives access to an unreleased third game simply because it is called a Trilogy Edition; verify what the listing says is included.
The bundle is relevant if you already know you want to follow the connected remake route and want access to the first two games. It is not a prerequisite for understanding every Final Fantasy game, and readers who choose an unrelated standalone entry do not need to buy it. Compare the actual product listing with your intended purchase: a title’s edition name alone does not establish its format, contents, or current availability.
Choose Final Fantasy XIV Online if you want an MMORPG
FINAL FANTASY XIV Online is the route for someone who specifically wants an MMORPG. That makes it a different choice from picking up a self-contained single-player game: its appeal is the online role-playing format, not simply being another numbered story to play before or after the others. Square Enix’s official series index distinguishes it within the franchise’s range of titles. Check the official index if you want to compare its listed premise with the single-player options.
Choose XIV because you want an online role-playing game, not because you think a newcomer has to complete it to understand the rest of the series. If you are unsure whether an MMORPG is what you want, decide first whether you would rather play in an online format or begin with a single-player story; that is a more useful distinction than the title’s number.
That format question should come before comparing XIV with XVI or the remake games. The publisher’s classification as an MMORPG tells you the broad kind of experience; it does not make XIV interchangeable with a standalone single-player recommendation. If online role-playing is not what you are seeking, it is perfectly reasonable to skip this route and choose a single-player title instead.

How to choose if you are still undecided
Use these questions in order. They narrow the choice without pretending that one game represents the whole franchise.
- Do you want a single-player story or an online role-playing game? If the online format is the attraction, consider XIV. If you want a single-player starting point, compare XVI with the FINAL FANTASY VII remake project.
- Does action-led combat appeal to you? If yes, XVI is the supported fit among these options: Square Enix describes it as an action RPG with real-time combat. Do not assume every other entry uses the same approach.
- Are you drawn to Midgar and willing to follow a connected story? If so, begin with FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE. Treat it as the first step in a continuing project, not as the conclusion of that saga.
- Is another setting or premise more appealing? Browse the official index for a candidate. Before you settle on it, look for signs that it is a sequel or part of a named subseries and check what earlier story context it expects.
- Can you play the chosen edition on your system? Confirm the platform and edition in the current publisher or retailer listing before purchasing. The platform details announced for a game or bundle can change over time.
If you are torn between two options, write down which matters more: the style of play, a particular setting, or avoiding a multi-game commitment. That simple check can break a tie. A newcomer seeking an officially standalone mainline entry and drawn to action has a clear match in XVI; a newcomer attracted to Midgar can start with the remake while accepting its continuing story; and someone who specifically wants online play has a different route in XIV.
Common mistakes when starting the series
Starting with I just because it is numbered first
The Roman numerals do not create a mandatory order for newcomers. The official index presents a range of numbered entries and premises; choose by interest, then check the specific title’s continuity.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Assuming every title with a number is connected—or that none are
Neither blanket assumption is safe. Some entries can be approached independently, while named subseries and remake projects connect their stories. Verify the individual game rather than inferring continuity from a number or the franchise name alone.
Treating “standalone” as a promise that no sequel follows
For the remake project, “standalone gaming experience” describes what the first game offers, while the trilogy announcement describes the continuing project. Decide whether you want a substantial first chapter in a connected story or a standalone mainline entry.
Choosing by a blanket recommendation instead of your preferred format
XVI, the Midgar remake route, and XIV serve different preferences: action-led single-player play, a connected character story, and MMORPG play. A recommendation that ignores those differences is less useful than a quick check of what kind of experience you want.
Assuming a bundle or a platform announcement settles every buying question
Publisher announcements establish dated availability and planned releases, not what a particular retailer has in stock today or which formats it currently offers. For the remake games, check whether the listing is for the edition you want and what it includes. For any other chosen title, verify compatibility and current availability on your own system before paying.
Platform and release details to verify
Platform information is time-sensitive, so use publisher announcements as dated information rather than a permanent compatibility guarantee. Square Enix’s June 9, 2025 announcement discussed FINAL FANTASY XVI availability for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC at that time; check the current listing for your device and edition. Read the publisher’s 2025 announcement for that dated platform update.

The third game’s announced date was April 8, 2027, which is in the future as of October 13, 2026. Confirm the latest publisher information and the exact product listing before making a purchase, particularly if you are comparing a standard edition with a bundle.
Those platform details are useful as a snapshot, not a substitute for checking before purchase. The September 2026 announcement names PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC for the first two remake entries. Confirm the listing for the specific device and edition you own, and recheck the date and availability of the final game if you are planning a future playthrough.
