To unlock The Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic) in Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, complete the main scenario quest “Dawntrail,” reach level 100 as a Disciple of War or Magic, then speak to the Wandering Minstrel in Tuliyollal at X:11.1 Y:14.6. Register for the duty through the Raid Finder; the listed minimum average item level is 710.
How to unlock The Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic)
- Complete the Dawntrail main scenario through the quest titled “Dawntrail.” No additional raid-series quest is listed as a prerequisite in Square Enix’s Patch 7.15 Notes.
- Switch to a level 100 Disciple of War or Magic.
- Travel to Tuliyollal and speak to the Wandering Minstrel at X:11.1 Y:14.6.
- Open the Raid Finder and register for The Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic). This duty is registered through the Raid Finder, not the standard Duty Finder.
- Meet the listed average item-level requirement of 710. The current Lodestone Eorzea Database listing also shows an item-level sync of 735.
Party size, roles, and queue rules
The duty has a 90-minute time limit and is designed for 24 players; its difficulty does not scale down with fewer players. The Patch 7.15 notes specify a standard preformed-party composition of 2 tanks, 2 healers, and 4 DPS. They also state that preformed alliances of 12–24 players can challenge the duty without role restrictions or automatic matching, and that rewards are not reduced for bringing fewer players.
For current alliance registration details, the Lodestone listing says an alliance must have at least 12 players and at least one member in each party. Matching is unavailable unless the alliance has 24 players; with a full 24-player alliance, role and item-level restrictions are lifted. Queue rules can change, so check the live duty listing when planning a group.
Do not confuse it with Jeuno: The First Walk
Jeuno: The First Walk is a separate standard alliance raid in the Echoes of Vana’diel series. Its unlock quest is “An Otherworldly Encounter,” given by the Hoobigo Messenger in Tuliyollal at X:13.0 Y:11.6 after completing the Dawntrail main scenario. That is not the Chaotic raid unlock: The Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic) uses the Wandering Minstrel and is registered through the Raid Finder.

#1 Best Overall
Square Enix’s Patch 7.1 Notes initially described a Chaotic Alliance Raid category in Raid Finder that could not yet be selected. Patch 7.15 later added the actual duty and its unlock requirements, which is why older guides may say the category was unavailable.

Uah’shepya in Solution Nine at X:8.7 Y:13.5 exchanges items obtained from the duty for rewards. Square Enix’s Patch 7.15 notes also describe limited-time bonuses that can increase the number and drop rate of coffer rewards, as well as additional rewards tied to the number of first-time players in a clear. These bonuses can vary; check the Raid Finder indicator for the current bonus status.
