Spoilers ahead for the Kaifeng Final Volume. To unlock “Gambit Beneath the Shimmer,” finish Kaifeng Jianghu Legacy Volume II: Shadows in Bloom, complete the Kaifeng main chapter called Furnace of Heaven and Earth in the version 1.2 update notes, and reach 6,000 Kaifeng exploration progress. Then go to Revelry Hall in Velvet Shade. The quest’s unusual puzzle loop includes chess games you are meant to lose, figurine-and-shadow matching, and four dialogue prompts, followed by an attack-deflection sequence and a four-opponent combat run.
How to unlock Gambit Beneath the Shimmer
The Where Winds Meet version 1.2 update notes list three participation requirements for the Kaifeng Final Volume:

Once those are met, travel to Revelry Hall in Velvet Shade and follow the quest marker or the golden butterflies. The update notes call the main chapter “Furnace of Heaven and Earth”; one secondary guide uses “Universal Furnace,” so the name you see may vary by localization. Where Winds Meet’s version 1.2 update notes use the former wording. The GameTrek walkthrough independently lists the same prerequisites and starting area.
Follow the scrolls, chess boards, and golden butterflies
At Revelry Hall, begin by inspecting the strange poetry scroll. The route then leads toward a chess board. Golden butterflies guide you from objective to objective; when you reach a new area, inspect nearby scrolls and clues before submitting the stone chess piece.
The central sequence repeats: play chess, move to the painting screen, position and rotate a figurine until its silhouette matches the shadow, view the screen, and answer the prompt. The GameTrek walkthrough says the first three chess games should be lost. Treat them as required puzzle steps, not matches you need to win. On the third figurine puzzle, matching the silhouette is not enough: adjust the piece’s size to fit the shadow as well.

After the fourth choice, walk along Endless Street and deflect the incoming attacks. The next encounter is a Five-Clawed Golden Dragon; use dodges and deflections to handle its attacks.
Then prepare for four back-to-back phases, one against each of these opponents:
- River Master
- Dao Lord
- Zheng E
- Murong Yuan
The walkthrough describes these as the opening phases of the respective battles, rather than full-length versions of each fight. Some golden attacks cannot be deflected, so dodge those instead of relying on a deflect. A video walkthrough also shows the broad progression through four chess puzzles, ten Shimmer’s Notes, choices, the dragon encounter, and the final sequence; use it for visual orientation if the route is unclear.

- Completing both that clue task and the stated quest task unlocks Revelry Hall’s fourth-floor key and “Shimmer of South Easter eggs.” The update notes do not explain the latter phrase further.
- Replaying the final volume’s Campaign: Supreme Freedom gives a chance to obtain the Into the Dream decoration. The notes also say it can be exchanged through the Season Shop.
- Clearing all Kaifeng campaigns rewards the A Zephyr’s Answer accessory.
