If you’re asking “Where’s Blackout 2?”, the developers’ interviews point to a different answer: Black Ops Royale brings Blackout’s looting, traversal and combat ideas into Warzone as an evolved mode, not a standalone sequel or a beat-for-beat remake. The interviews explain that creative choice and the mode’s place in Warzone; they do not document a formal decision to reject a separate Blackout 2.
Why is Black Ops Royale in Warzone instead of being Blackout 2?
The developers describe Black Ops Royale as a new Warzone experience rooted in the original Blackout, adapted for today’s players rather than presented as a numbered sequel. In a March 13, 2026 interview with Xbox Wire, Call of Duty: Warzone game director Pete Actipis said the team saw an opportunity to give Warzone players a different battle royale experience built on the franchise’s first one. He described the relationship plainly: “This is not a remake. It lives and breathes as its own unique experience.”
Actipis said the team reviewed systems including weapon acquisition and upgrades, inventory, bullet drop and aspirational rewards, deciding which supported the central gameplay loop and which needed reinterpretation or updating. The stated reason for the Warzone placement is to bring that fresh experience to a mature Warzone audience—not a disclosed budget, licensing or platform constraint.
What Black Ops Royale carries forward—and what it changes
Raven Software lead producer Jason Rhode told GamingTrend on March 12, 2026 that the design question was how to “take that Blackout experience and evolve it.” Rhode did not work on the original Blackout; his explanation concerns the current team’s approach to its legacy.

- Developed by Treyarch and Raven, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is a spy action thriller set in the early 90s, a period of transition and upheaval in global politics, characterized by the end of the Cold War and the rise of the United States as a single superpower.
- This is signature Black Ops across a cinematic single-player Campaign, a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, and the epic return of Round-Based Zombies.
- The Black Ops 6 Campaign provides dynamic moment-to-moment gameplay that includes a variety of play spaces with blockbuster set pieces and action-packed moments, high-stakes heists, and cloak-and-dagger spy activity.
- In a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, players will test their skills across 16 new maps at launch, including 12 core 6v6 maps and 4 Strike maps that can be played 2v2 or 6v6.
- Black Ops 6 also marks the epic return of Round-Based Zombies, the fan-favorite mode where players will take down hordes of the undead in two brand-new maps at launch. Post-launch, players can look forward to even more exciting maps and groundbreaking experiences dropping into both Multiplayer and Zombies.
| Design area | Blackout | Black Ops Royale |
|---|---|---|
| Release context | A battle royale mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. | A free-to-play battle royale mode in Warzone. |
| Loot and progression | Rhode identifies looting and building power over a match as core Blackout qualities the team wanted to preserve. | Players scavenge for weapons and gear, then upgrade weapons through rarity tiers; there are no loadouts, Buy Stations or in-game cash. |
| Traversal | Rhode cites faster map navigation using tools such as the Grappling Hook and wingsuit. | Blackout-inspired traversal and scavenging sit alongside modern Warzone movement. Players enter by wingsuit; Avalon supports wall-jumping Omnimovement, swim routes and crossable tidal flats. |
| Zombies | Zombies appeared at points of interest. | Zombies are used as an event tied to high-tier loot and high-risk/reward opportunities. |
| Match recovery | Not stated in the cited materials. | There is no Gulag. Eliminated players can redeploy using a scavenged token or a team-activated Redeployment Tower. |
Rhode’s shorthand for the design goal was to bring Blackout’s core elements forward while “evolv[ing] them rather than recreat[ing] the experience beat for beat.” The distinction matters: Black Ops Royale draws on Blackout’s feel, but the interviews do not establish that it is a direct narrative or product sequel.
How Avalon was adapted for battle royale
Avalon’s earlier Endgame layout was built largely around player-versus-environment encounters, so the team revisited it for player-versus-player matches. Rhode said player concerns led them to reconsider water, floor levels and movement, including ways to escape fights by jumping from cliffs and using the wingsuit to reposition. Those changes prompted a broader pass on map pace and flow.

What a match is announced to include
At announcement, Black Ops Royale was specified for 100 players in 25 four-person squads. Players deploy with a pistol and wingsuit, then search for weapons and equipment and improve weapons by rarity. The announced rules remove loadouts, Buy Stations, the Gulag and cash. Redeployment instead depends on finding a token or activating a Redeployment Tower with the squad.

Activision announced the Blackout private beta for Black Ops 4 on September 10, 2018, describing it as a last-player-standing battle royale built around Black Ops characters, weapons and locations. Treyarch co-studio head Dan Bunting said at the time that the studio planned to support Blackout “for the long haul” and evolve it using the series’ history. That establishes how the original mode was presented; it does not explain the internal reasoning behind Black Ops Royale’s current release format.

So “Blackout 2” works as shorthand for the experience some fans hoped to see, but the developers’ own description is more specific: Black Ops Royale is a Blackout-inspired evolution built for Warzone. The interviews explain that design direction, not a documented business decision about a standalone sequel.
